Default New Ludwig blue sparkle bop kit!

Picking this baby up on friday. I was about to buy a Gretsch Catalina Jazz when I found this beast!

Finally a pro level kit I can keep for yeaaaaaaars to come, and its only a 1 year old Ludwig Classic Maple with bags.

Standard bop sizes 18X14(virgin!) 12X8(no mount) 14X14 I know your all jealous! Especially folks like foursticks, karl, britt & wave(although that kumu is stunning!) Finally my turn to show off :P

I will have updated pics later w/ cymbals and hardware

I was thinking about adding a rail mount and L arm but I wanna get your opinions on that first.

The list, craigs that is :P It actually happens to be a buddy of my teacher, He first mention he had a friend selling some ludwigs for 1k but I wasnt sure I could afford them, a few weeks later I happened to browse craigslist and figured this had to be the set he was talking about and I happened to have it in my budget so I had to steal em!

Gettin it for a whoppin $1,000, It matches the exact same sizes and finish to a T that I was looking for, Patients really does pay off!
Yeah, another drummer brother scores a "gently used" pro level kit rather than throw his cash (away) into a lower tiered new kit. Great score. Whether to go L-arm and tom mount. I personally don't like either. I like total flexibility. But if you either like the traditional look or don't want to carry the extra hardware, hey, it's your kit.

...very nice jayp, and you can add me to the jealous list.

I had that fab four Ludwig reissue kit, the 12, and 14" toms sounded a lot bigger than I thought they would. You should be very happy with those.

I am also struggling with wheather or not to add a rail mount on my 18" bass drum. I have one on my 24, and my 22, but I that little voice on my left shoulder is urging caution.

If you do decide to add one, and it does not matter if it is an original Ludwig, I would reccomend you consider the DW. They are nice and sturdy, and less cumbersome than the Gibralters are.

Whatever you decide, good luck, and once again, great score. I hope that you get more years out of them than Liz Taylor gets out of a marriage.

+1 to the jealous list.

Almost my dream kit, in fact (if only it were made about 40 years earlier).

Enjoy those awesome drums!

Wow man. You got one heck of a steal on these. Seriously, like harry said, this is just great when a guy can find a sweet (and I mean SWEET) gently used kit for a great price tag. Can't wait to see pics with cymbals.

Oh hell yea! Amen brother! I don't even know if "gently used" would fit this, he said he bought/ordered them last year august 07 and he didn't even really play them they just have sat in the bags since.

personally, i wouldnt get the rail mount...cause your gonna be drilling on your virgin bass...
and the less drilling the better IMO...and if the snare stand is working for you, keep using it...

i personally dont like the rail mount system...but that is just me..

BTW: nice kit!! looks great! cant wait for pics with it all set up!

A true classic!

What kit do you have currently? Wasn`t it a Sonor?

PS: Sparkle is working so well on gigs. =)

I have to agree with the no drilling plan. Once its drilled there is no going back. You may have more options but I'm going to bet you can find a proper place with the snare stand.
BTW thats a great non-Gretsch kit. JK. Absolutely gorgeous. Like my Renowns find,
patience pays off. Good job.

Very sweet kit!! As far as your dilema with mounting the tom, I mount my tom off of my cymbal stand with a L ballmount. I would buy a RIMS mounting system and just do that. First of all it is more secure then a snare stand, using a snare stand for the tom can be very top heavy, it would make me nervous. Second it would save you from drilling into that very sweet bass drum. And third Gibralter makes a very nice single tom mount for cymbal stands that is very durable and cheaper then most of the big brand name versions. Good Luck! And by the way welcome to the Ludwig clan!!!

Jayp,
That is a beautiful set, congrats. Personally I would play the kit for a while before drilling into that virgin. Pick-up a RIMS for now or use a snare stand. Then, if you don't like it, drill away. I'm with Baz, the DW mount is a wonderful piece of hardware.

first of all... schweet! I'd love that kit, although I'd probably love it in 22, 13, 16 a little more, but it's fantastic none the less.

Don't drill it. At least, don't drill her yet. Just go the snare stand or RIMS option for a while and see if that works for you.

If you decide you HAVE to drill her, go a classic style rail mount

My vote goes for the RIMS mount and L arm with ball mount (from a cymbal stand).

I would keep it a virgin shell, just because they feel/sound better, IMHO. If you're wanting a "boomy" sound, keep it undrilled. If you're ONLY going to use it for a "thuddy" sound, using dampening heads and treating it with pillows or blankets or whatnot, then adding the mount isn't that big of a deal, sound-wise. You would be diminishing the resale value, though, as virgin shells are hot right now. Appearance-wise and functionality-wise, I hear that the DW "banana mounts" are all the rage, if you so choose to go that route (don't do it, don't do it, don't do it...)

My sentiments exactly. What a wonderful kit. And if it were 22, 16, 13 it would be perfect for me. I'd leave it virgin. No holes = no regrets.

True true, I think I'm going to leaver her alone. I don't want to hurt the resale of these babies if I happen to somehow sell them 40 years down the road(I hope not) :P

I can not even explain how excited I am to pick up this kit.

How does a guy like me find the PERRRRRRRRFECT set in size color and manufacturer for only 1k on craiglist IN my town. Ahh what a beautiful day!

Great kit man, absolutley awesome... You gotta take some better photos when you get it set up though because the sparkle doesn't come through very well. That is now one of my favorite kits on the forum. Great demensions as well.

FYI, I have seen rail mounts that just attach to the existing lugs. There are mounting options out there that allow you to keep from drilling into your bass drum... Either way, it looks great!

Here's a snare to go with your kit:

I doubt it will stay at the current price though.

Wow, amazing drum kit. I would enjoy seeing a show with the drummer drumming on that. Can you take a whole bunch more pics, I am interested in getting a kit like that. Also please do not drill holes to put a mount on it, and IMO new luddys sound better than old ones. Although that is not the case with Grestsch and their 70's and below.

Well sorry for the delay in pictures guys, I recently moved and can't find my digital camera charger, I have some crappy cell pictures but I think I'll wait untill I can fine something with more detail...Unless you all can't wait :P

Quick Review:

The kit is immaculate as far as wrap/chrome/flaws there are no scratches or anything the previous owner took awesome care of these luddys(I imagine he would he had a vintage DW kit that was pretty much MINT)
The heads are fyberskyns over stock ludwig weather master coated heads, the kick has a coated ps3 with stock reso, even with only the batters replaced this thing SINGS, and does it with beauty, full rich tom sounds, great tuning ranges that I don't think I'll eveerrrr grow bored of hearing. Kick right now is a little plfffff but Im planning on changing the stock heads to abmassadors with a stip of felt for a little more umpf/boom.

Im going to pick up coated ambassadors all around both batter and reso, and also keep the current fyberskyns(witch I reallllllly like I just want to test the ambys out on the kit) to compare.

I am very happy with my ludwig choice and probably will never sell this classic set.

Theres no doubt in my mind anyone looking for a pro kit or a classic vintage luddy to check out a modern version of the ludwig classic maple series to fill those shoes.

Thanks
JayP

PS: I read online that the classic maples come with 45 degree edges, but when taking a look at mine they look more rounded than anything(is there a possibility of rounded over INSIDE 45's?) I will take pictures later.(I know your going to ask for em :P)

EDIT:

Ahh what the hay, heres some lame phone camera pics, they do the sparkles some justice actually :-D

Beauty! Good deal too, congrats! Ludwig Classic Maple are incredible....nothing else sounds like them, out there.

This is similar to mine but I have a 14x20 bass and it's champagne sparkle...I also paid exactly $1000 for mine. Too cool.
