Default Look What I Found

I found this Ludwig kit on ebay, 9x13,16x16,14x22. There are a few scatches and a small gash on the side of the kick. The gash does not penetrate through the shell, although you can see it from the inside of the shell. It caused the paint to start peeling around a two inch area on the outside. The good news is that it does not effect the sound of the drum. The kit cost me $500.

Sweeeet!! Love the bass hoops. Is that a matching snare too? If the damage really doesn't affect the sound, that's a pretty sweet deal.

No that's not a matching snare, although it is a 6.5x14 Ludwig Classic Maple, I had purchased the snare off ebay a few months ago. Now, unfortunately, I have to sell my Slingerland kit.

Looks like a sweet deal. I'm glad to see a trend (it seems) of cats on DrummerWorld buying good "used" kits for 5 bills rather than buying a new kit from on line or GC, and immediately loosing half it's value as soon as you take it out of the box.

MadMax,
Killer deal! I'm with Harry, I'd rather get a good sounding used kit, than some piece of crap new set. Good job.

Wow! That's a pretty fantastic deal... and I'm absolutely lovin' that finish.

I wonder what happened to that bass drum.

Congrats!

Good deal on this nice kit.

I would for one, before damaging the shell further, remove the hardware on the bass drum, repairing the wood the best I could and refinish the outside(stain & lacquer), then it wont be even noticeable.

I'm with mind-drummer, That should be an easy fix, Gorilla glue a piece of wood laminate over the damaged area "On the INSIDE" of the shell, then you can sand the outside area, fill it with wood filler sand it smooth and restain the shell, Any paint store can match the color pretty close.

Otherwise, that is a killer set and I'm with everyone else, vintage drums are the way to go, I've always had a set at one time or another, and your's look incredible.

Like the others said, that`s a very good deal!
500 for such a nice Ludwig is a good price. And although it has a ding inside the shell it`s still a great kit, especially if it doesn`t affect the sound at all.

I really dig it, the finish looks beautiful as well.

Thanks guys, but it's really not a vintage kit, I think it's from the nineties. They look like the same 6ply shells they use on the newer kits, and the lugs all have little rubber gaskets. This kit is the best sounding kit I've ever owned, it's warm, but loud when you need that volume, they project really well. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that gash, I'm thinking about rewrapping the kit in silver or pink sparkle. I've always liked sparkles and it would make the kit look new, but still retain that vintage look.

The badge & BD tom mount isn't saying it a 90s kit to me ;-)

As for the repair, do you know any good woodworker ? He will probably be able to help you with the repair.

Please dont wrap that beautiful finish, it's a classic and it never get outdated.

The badge and mount are standard 1990's fare. My 1997 Ludwig's have identical stuff. Not sure when Ludwig went to the larger keystone badge. Of course, the easy way to resolve the date is to look at the date stamp in the shell. :-)

I do agree... it'd be a shame to wrap up that nice finish. :)

Here's a couple more pictures of the drums with a snare stand holding the tom and on the Ludwig arm. My Ludwig snare on a vintage Ludwig stand. Notice the swivel feet on the legs, from what I understand these are in high demand with collectors.

Though you're missing hi-hats, the setup looks pretty good. Nice snare stand, too. You really are going vintage ludwig style. Well, except, you need a speed king.
