Default Check out the deal I got on this kit...

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I never thought I'd own a ddrum kit. Last weekend however, I saw a show in Detroit and the drummer, a good friend of mine and an incredible musician was playing a really cool looking pocket ash kit (with 20" bass). I have been looking for a bigger kit like this for some summer gigs I have coming up and was actually really impressed with the sound of this thing.

After doing a lot of shopping around on the internet, yesterday I found one of the limited edition Maple Pocket kits in Iron Dust finish for $549 from a place called "The Music Farm" in Ohio. I hadn't found any of the ash kits for less than 799 online and was able to talk a guy at guitar center down on one of the ash kits to 677, but at 549 + shipping (69) I had to go with this deal... I've read conflicting reviews of these online, but saw an article of praise in Modern Drummer (for what its worth)

Here's the kit. I'll post recordings eventually. It is a limited edition (only 250 were made). The finish is called Iron Dust, and the hardware is apparently black chrome I figure, even if it sounds moderately okay, it still looks great and cost very little. Besides, I play with two shredding guitar players, so I'll be suprised if anyone can hear me anyway. LOL!

The specs are (really cool):

20X20 bass
13X7 snare
12X8 tom
14X12 floor tom
16X12 floor tom

Judging from my new Ddrum Diode kit, that one will be absolutly extrodinary! Trust me, Ddrum bass drums sound so much bigger then they actually are! You will enjoy that kit, I can promise you!

The ash kit that I heard live was very loud. A lot like Oak actually, though they say it falls somewhere between Birch and Maple. Punchy bass and great snare.

I'm expecting this maple kit to be a little warmer and thats fine. With such large dimensions I don't think I necessarily need more volume.

I think that looks great, and for the price it is great. Happy Drumming.

As one of the few owners of an Ash kit, I can heartily recommend the sound. It falls somewhere between Birch and Maple and is probably a little more Birch; that is to say that there is a good emphasis of the attack, but with a nice resonant tone once you get them dialed in. Mine take a little while to tune, but once they're in, they're great. They're definitely 'audience perspective' drums in my case. They sound OK behind the kit, but stand a few feet back (as I do when mine is on a loaner) and they sound really phenomenal. No reason why yours can't sound as good as mine.

I think everyone keeps missing the fact that this kit is actually MAPLE...

I've heard the ash kits and I like them, but the deal I got only applied to these maple pocket kits. I think Ash is a fine wood for drums and the grain is beautiful as well. They look a lot like oak.

Not me. I read all of the words, well the ones I knew, and I saw maple.

Argh! Thoroughly discredited here. Many apologies, I was tired last night and wasn't paying clear enough attention. Just hit me.

I hope its decent. The good thing is at that price, theres almost no chance of having buyers remorse. I've checked out the ddrum forum. Not a lot of activity over there. It seems like the main thing I've got to worry about is stock heads, which I'm generally fine with, and some small quality control issues.

I'll just take the thing apart when I get it and check the bearing edges. The main thing is, can I tune them to sound okay. My guess is yes. There are stories of "freak"kits out there that have messed up rims and hoops, but I've heard the same exact horror stories from Gretsch, DW, Yamaha, Tama, Pearl and everyone else. Ultimately the customer service seems good so if I have an issue, I already know who to contact.

Well, the kit arrived and the 16" floor tom is cracked along its entire length. The finish is pretty, but the laquer is thin and will chip easily. The hoops were pretty beat up and there were a couple of other small cosmetic issues on the bass drum. The snare looks great and the hardware seems good too. I did have an issue with the threads on one of the bass drum lugs, but I just cranked it on in there and I don't intend to ever change the resonant head anyway.

I'm getting a replacement shell, and though I'm not ecstatic about some of the other flaws, I bought this kit with the intention of punishing it this summer anyway. The bearing edges look fine, they were level on both sides and I was comically reassured by the fact that the inside of each shell contains a sticker that simply says "PASS". So, there is some measure of quality control.

All in all, it looks like a kit that you would expect to pay $550 for, but I haven't actually gotten to play it yet, so I'm not sure how it sounds.

That sounds like a lot of damage to the drum kit, even for 550 dollars that's not acceptable. How bad are the hoops? And I'd get that bass drum lug checked out too, even if you don't want to replace the resonant head.
Other than that, nice kit! I like the sleek looks of it.

The rest of the damage is purely cosmetic. One of the hoops was chipped up a little, and I thought about sending it back, but honestly it would just be prolonging the inevitable. I was able to position the existing chips under the claws, and put that hoop on the batter side.

You can't see any of this stuff unless you are really looking for it. In other words, I don't think the crowd will care and it doesn't bug me anyway. I actually kind of expected and prepared myself for much worse to tell you the truth.

(other than that damned cracked shell, that was BS).

I still say I read all of the words, but was this set used? That seems like a lot of damage for a new set. Or was it a floor model.?

Nope, not a floor model and not used, obviously never even opened even though I did call to ask about the condition of the set before I purchased it. Believe me, the whole thing had never been assembled and was still in its original box for shipping. Even the heads were still wrapped in shipping plastic. Oddly, the boxes are in perfect shape, just not the contents.

I really like how it looks. And even with the damages, I'd say you still got a damn good deal.

Well, I just got back from rehearsal and I must say, this kit kicks serious butt. It sounded great. The snare is awesome and the bass drum is a punchy little cannon (I just need to port the front head). Great sounding kit, I would highly recommend picking one up.

man i love to see people with similar tastes....we have the exact same kit size wise, mine is lime green and ash...love'em and quite honestly, you just can't beat them for the price..hope you like the maple...the bass drums are beasts whether your playing metal or jazz...i just happen to play more funk, which in my opinion is perfect for these kits
