Default Any drummers here from Cuba?

Hi, fellow drummers!

So, the thing is, I'm traveling to Cuba (4.August - 28. August) and I'm looking for a place to live in Havana, of course my first idea was to ask here, maybe I could meet some fellow drummers, that would be really cool, also I'd be glad if I can help somehow. So, yeah...

Anybody from Cuba here? Or maybe you know a place that you'd advise for me to live? I really don't want to live in a hotel, that would mean that I won't see the real Cuba at all

Anyone been there? How was it? Share your experience! I'll gladly appreciate any help

Raymundo! That's awesome! If I were you, I'd go to www.congaplace.com and ask for reccomendations on that forum. There are lots of guys over there who have good connections that might actually be able to help you out. Good luck!

Oh, thank you very much, I just registered there!

Yeah, I know... it's awesome :) Cuba is probably the only place in the world which I really, really want to visit! The environment, the culture, the feeling that time had stopped there since 60ties... and cigars+rum khehe I'm soooo overwhelmed about with trip!!

You are obviously allowed to travel unrestricted from Latvia to Cuba... Where do you connect?

Damn! Paris to Havana is a loooong flight. Load up your ipod.

Well, the good news is that if you want to study with someone, it should be pretty easy to hook up with a teacher for the month. The hard part will be choosing what to focus on, and then of course leaving.

Are you planning on studying kit? If I were you, I'd look for a younger player and ask about Timba. Timba is awesome. I'm sure there are all kinds of crazy things going on within that genre that you'd get a lot out of.

Well, that's the cheapest and actually FASTEST way how to get to Havanna... that damned Atlantic ocean... :)

I don't have a plan right now, but I definitely want to get into the local drumming scene and learn a bit! I have ~4 months to figure out what I'm going to do there so I'm opened to any ideas, any advice is very helpful! Although, it's a trip for two actually... khem...

Well we have a huge number of world class Cuban musicians living here in Vancouver. One of thw worlds best latin kit players resides in Vancouver who's originally from Havana and knows everybody on the local scene in Cuba by the name of Gilberto Moreaux.

You could send him a PM on his MYSPACE page since he's not a member here. Very nice guy who would probably be glad to help out Raymond. Good luck!

My first impression is that he's like a mix of Horacio ''El Negro'' Hernandez and Chriss ''Daddy'' Dave
