It is not as unusual as one would think; metal fatigue, especially in drum gear played by a drummer who can brutally punish a pedal for extended periods is not uncommon.

Looks like it broke just about where the ball of a heel-up drummer's foot would rest.

Does happen. But depends how hard you play and for how long. How long have you had the pedal?

You didn't read the OP's post carefully, did you.

I didn't do it, but i know the guy who broke the pedal in my avatar photo. It would have to be metal fatigue, since obviously putting enough pressure on the head to snap the pedal in that spot would make the head fail first.

I broke the footplate in half...(same place as the pedal in your photograph), on a old but un-used Ludwig Speedking pedal about three years ago, & I weigh only 70 kilos / 132 pounds.

We put it down to a fault in the manufacture of the pedal. These things happen.

Remember seeing that on Tool's webpage a while ago.

Man, that pedal looks beat up, he must have been using it for a while. Danny used to use Axis and DW5000s, apparently he went through those fairly regularly.

With the volume Danny plays at and how strong his leg muscles are, I'm not surprised to see it happen, he's definitely a big guy.
