Default Found some pics of my old 80's monster.

This was a Remo kit. Sounded great live but real crappy when recorded.
The specs were:
20"x48" bass drums
8x10 tom
10x12 tom
12x13 tom
14x15 tom
16x16 floor
18x18 floor

Zildjian platnium cymbals. I don't remember the exact specs on the crashes but there were 5 crashes
3 16" and 2 18"
20" rock ride
2 16" chinas
2 18" chinas
10" splash
40" gong

Wow, now that's pretty rad.

Those bass drums look cool. I like the long toms too.
I remember contacting Ressurection Drums in FL, about some long 24's, but they weren't 48"!
Man....

There's a drummer in Detroit (Gunner Ross) that was endorsed by Ludwig in the 80's.
He had a custom kit with 30x30" bass drums.
Those drums were so big that they sounded good through the PA, but like crap un-mic'ed.

He played locally in a band called The Almighty Strut.
He was also with Blackfoot, and Ted Nugent.

He's on that Fred Bear (sp?) song.

The guy on the side with the tight jeans and high tops brought back some bad memories though.... :-P

I'm from Detroit,Gunner is a mad man he used to have cannons mounted on top of those 30 x 30 bass drums I could be wrong but I thought they were 32 x 32 bass drums

The shorts are PRICELESS!!!!

When you said monster, I was expecting a ig kit you know... but a 48" deep BD?!?!?!... man... and two of them?... just hauling that was an adventure.

What cases you used?... man... but for STAGE IMPACT it sure was a statement... very cool... what happened to it?

I'm repulsed by nearly every facet of these photos. The cartoon drum sizes, the Cozy Powell hairdo, the Thunderdome rack, the zebra print plum-smugglers, the Marty McFly-looking sound guy...just a horrendous display of the 80's zeitgeist.

Yet...I...cant't...take...my...eyes...off...it.

Now that I think of it. I love everything in these photos.

Thanks for making my day!!

that's ridiculous (in a good way!) Wow dude that's pretty crazy, i guess that must have solved the problem of getting a big sound with a tight feel on those kicks anyway!

For the record that was the one and only time i wore those on stage. Just my luck that it was photographed. LOL As for what happened to the set. The cage i gave to a good friend of mine (who still has it). The drums believe it or not were bought by a church!

In the immortal words of Bonzo... "CANNONS!!!!"

I thought I had it seen it all as far as drums go. But that is really something. I would love to hear those drums. And to think now the trend is short stack toms... lol.

Great old memories,
I used to hang out at Resurrection Drums (we used to play across the street at The Button South). Those guys had it goin' on.

We also opened for Blackfoot and I sat behind Gunner's kit. Those kick drums are by far the largest I've ever played (and seen for that matter). I'm 6'3" and they made me look like a person with achondroplasia.

Drumrunner, the kit, the lights, the riser....good times were had by all in the good ol' days.
Thanks

I can believe that. This is a set that God might play (in white, of course, but otherwise the same).

As morbid as that is, it's pretty true. I'm not sure, if you're really going for that "thump" then I'd probably want some more dampening. Oh, and remember, he has two bass drums... ;)

I thought those lights looked familiar. God those 2112's were brutal. We would watch David Letterman, walk across the street from the Ho Jo, and go to work. Free sunglasses at closing time.

Remember the rumors about Yngwie ?

Thanks again,

Yeas i remember all the rumors. As a matter of fact are old bass player was Wally Voss who took us to Yngwie's house to get a special guitar to record with. Every room in his house had a half stack with a guitar ready to go. As well as coke on every table.

Agreed. The trend now is to these shorty Chihuahua drums that sound thin and yappy.

People think deep drums are an '80s thing, but most drums have been deeper - sometimes much, much deeper - for thousands of years. The Western trap set is barely 100. There's something about the commanding, rich tone of deep drums, like the sonic equivalent of a low-hanging set of testicles. Drums that are not afraid to be drums!

I heard of you guys. I was in a band called Aces Wild from 87-03. We played with Marilyn Manson too only back then they were Marylin Manson and the Spooky Kids. I remember at that show Marilyn's girl at the time went on stage and started giving him a BJ in the middle of the show and both ended up getting arrested.

We also opened up for Flock of Seagulls, Jason Bonham, Warrant, And Skid Row. For awile the inside joke was that we were the official opening act of the hair band has beens.
