Default bass drum trouble

My band is recording at my house (with very limited supplies) and i can't get my bass drum to sound like a bass drum.

Right now it sounds like i'm hitting pvc (is that right?) tubing.

I don't know if its my tuning or mic placement or both, so i posted a recording of a groove and some pics (i'll have em up soon) of my bass drum.

comments and/or help would be greatly appreciated!

ps
i wasn't trying to impress anyone when i recorded this, its just to give you a gist of how my kit sounds.

Other forum guys like Wavelength and Harry Conway are going to be of more help than I will be, but I'm sure they're going to need more info to start with:
- mic type
- current mic placement
- drumhead type
- muffling used?
- drum size
- size of the room

At first I was thinking it's a phase issue, but after listening to the mp3 it sounds like an EQ thing. What's the mic setup?

Is the mic you're using on the kick designed to handle high SPL levels? I ask because it sounds like there is a little clipping going on with the kick. Is the kick mic inside the kick, right up on the batter head? If so, try pulling it away from the batter head a few to several inches, or better yet, right outside the front of the kick by the resonant head.

That mic is definitely clipping.
