Renaissance heads give warm tonal sounds. Very melodic indeed. I prefer Ambassodors, clear G2's, and Clear EC2's myself, but Renaissance heads are pretty nice.

The sound is meant to emulate calf skin--warm, dry and articulate. I found these heads very difficult to tune and not very durable. Some of them were defective right out of the box, with dents or wrinkles. I much prefer the Evans J1 Etched heads--same great calf sound, but much more durable and consistent.

I'll go along with Zack on trying those Evans J1 heads. I have one on my main snare now and love the sound I get from it. Good brush surface too. Tried the Remo Renaissance a few years back and was a bit disapointed. If you like Remo and want the calf sound the Fibreskyns are probably a better choice IMO.
