Default FINALLY!

It's been awhile, but I'm finally posting on drummerworld after a loooong hiatus. Grad school has been exceptionally busy, so it's taken away most of my internet time. Anyway, I was cruising eBay for a new kit, when all of a sudden I happened upon a set of Yamaha Recording Customs. I was dead set on those, however the bidding went too high for the likes of my wallet, so I nearly gave up. However, I looked at some of the other auctions that had ended while I was bidding and came upon a set of beautiful Oak Custom drums. I emailed the guy, and after a few exchanges via email, I snagged the whole kit for $815 ($750 before shipping).

The finish is Bryce Canyon Brown (discontinued)
The sizes are 9x12, 14x14 Toms & 18x20 Bass Drum
Sadly, the snare was not included in the auction.

Here are some teaser photos from the eBay page.
In a week or two, I should have photos from my studio with my Bosphorus pies(!):

The last picture is the only thing keeping these drums from being in perfect condition, and as you can see, it's a miniscule dent in the drum. Nothing to be too worried about.

Yeah, I've heard some criticism of the loud nature of Oaks. I took this into account before I purchased them and found a video of Peter Erskine (back in his Yamaha days, of course) showing that the Oaks could be used for jazz. Of course, he's using J1 heads, but I think it shows the non-believers that Oaks can be used for lighter music.
Here's the link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yGp0pAie0qg

But seeing as I play hip-hop, funk and ska, I probably won't have any issues with the drums being loud anyway.

Ah yes, this was the video that made me even more irritated with the Oak Customs that I had...because mine didn't sound like that! My fault I'm sure *lol*

Beautiful kit. What snare are you using with it again?

Well, right now I'll have to settle with my 13x3 Steel Pearl Piccolo. Not ideal, but it gets the job done.

I'm going to be in the market (come Christmas) for a new, pro snare to compliment the new, pro kit. I'm thinking either Special Edition Cherry Maple 12x7 Black Panther, or the Yamaha Musashi Oak 12x6 (w/ Black Groove Wedge).

Awesome choice man!

I just picked up the Black Panther Blonde Birdseye Maple 13X6.5 its a pretty sweet drum and classy too(if your intersted pick one up from Shane at Justdrums), It has both adjustable throw and buttplate witch is pretty cool, I play jazz and funk and all sorts of other styles and Its warm fundamental tone is great in a jazz and when you crank it up its great for funk or rock, even with the stock heads. I highly suggest checking this snare out and you can find them for about 130 or less.

Ha! Well, I've only partly finished. I'm on semester 1/3 in graduate studies in English. But a year from now, I'll be finishing up... which is FANTASTIC!

And I'll probably get a job as a librarian or some sort of teacher's/writer's slaveboy.

Very nice. That has to be the best looking set on the forum...next to mine. LOL

I love the finish and I'm sure with a little finesse you can play them so they aren't loud. Congratulations.

Oh gee thanks... I'm sure a lot of people would argue that their kit is nicer, no offense to Kung_F00 :)

It's not so much that the Oaks are loud, it's that they have brighter, harsher overtones that either work for you or they don't.

Fantastic looking kit. If any kit looks amazing with a white front bass head, it's your new one.

Okay, here's the deal.

I woke up this morning and checked UPS, expecting my delivery to have arrived. Instead, I found this:

"Your package has experienced an exception." with the following details: "A CORRECT STREET NAME IS NEEDED FOR DELIVERY. UPS IS ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN THIS INFORMATION."

Come to find out that the sender gave them the PO Box number, but not the street address. So, I got on the phone with UPS and gave them the right address. I know I told a lot of you that they'd be here today, but you'll have to wait til tomorrow. And as far as tomorrow goes, I may have pics, but count on most of the pics to come Wednesday night when the Oaks play their first show.

Man that stinks. I always hate when you're expecting something and it gets delayed. It makes me a nervous wreck :)

Why did you give the sender the P.O. Box anyway?

Well, I had some options. I could have sent them to my apartment, but I knew I was going to be out doing work all day, so they'd likely be sitting outside of my apartment. My apartment isn't in a -bad- area, persay, but I didn't want to run the chance of someone messing with my drums.

So I had them sent to my friend's PO Box at the local college. The college's address is a PO Box followed by the street address. I've actually had tons of packages sent to my school PO Box (when I was an undergrad), so I was actually surprised that this particular delivery was any different than the others. Well, whatever. Drums should be in tomorrow.

Indeed, I'd say it's more a quality of the drum that can be very desirable. A drummer buddy of mine has a kit, in that exact finish, and it's beatuiful. Sounds great. And anyone with some dynamic in their playing style can exercise the drums thru their entire "volume" range.

Hey, here's cymbal and snare specs. I'm hoping to start on my snare collection when I start working during winter break.

Current Snares:
Yamaha Birch/Mahogany 14x5.5
Pearl Steel Piccolo 13x3
Rogers Dynasonic (70's) 14x6.5

Possible New Snares:
Spaun Acrylic Cokebottle (Vented) 13x5.5
Yamaha Musashi Oak 12x6
Yamaha Nouveau Copper 14x6.5

-------------------------------------------------------------

Cymbal Setup (Ska Band):
14" Bosphorus Traditional Hi-Hats
17" Bosphorus Traditional Crash
19" Bosphorus Masters Crash/Ride
20" Bosphorus Traditional Ride

Cymbal Setup (Recording, Practice):
12" Bosphorus Turk Hi-Hats
19" Bosphorus Masters Crash/Ride
20" Bosphorus Traditional Ride

I might get some new cymbals down the road, but right now I'm focused on getting a diverse array of snares.

You say it like that's a bad thing ...

Beautiful drums. It is easier to make a loud drum quiet than it is to make a quiet drum loud. The finish is gorgeous - bold, rich grain.

With the Bosphoruses, you'll have a truly outstanding kit.

So, my band was supposed to go into the studio last night, but due to a whole bunch of problems we had to cancel our studio visit and reschedule for next week. So, I don't have any new pics or recordings like I thought I would. Sorry, fellas. Anyway, to your comments:

frank: i know the reso head is slightly tilted, but it's no major concern right now, so i'll fix it when i have time for the little things. and the floor tom's batter head may look warped or too loose but that's definitely not the case. i think it's just a lighting thing.

driver: much thanks, it is pretty comfortable!

ian: no thanks, brah. you can look, but don't touch. :P

youenjoy: i was surprised when it came without the white reso, too! but it's no big thing, when i get some money (and a free second -- seriously, i've had barely any time to do anything outside of grad school work) i'll go around the kit, getting new heads for everything.

i'm thinking about a emad/smooth white eq3 combo for the bass, and g2 over g1 clears on the toms. any opinions?
