Good job!.. great sound too. Is the sound from the recorder as well?

I guess you were positioned stage -right... if Bruner's bass drums are pointing towards the audience..

This guy has some serious speed, and some very different and unique chops. Saw him at the MD festival some years back. He has grown since then ...musically as well..

yes i have a special microphone mounted on the cam. Yes i was on stage. And did you probably not see, but you see it on the main gallery picture: he has three bassdrums...

AAh I didn't realize he had 3 legs!!.... he certainly sounds like he does!

I really enjoyed his solos too. I think he constructs them very well, with good dynamics and a theme.
Also enjoyed the single handed roll and those lighting fast singles towards the end of PART 2.

what a talent!

Mr. Bruner is great! All I can say actually.
His playing is so intense, his fill-ins, grooving...so tight. Then again he shows a lot of musicality. He repeats fill-ins, figures...it simply never sounds random.

It sounds very structured, great coordination, foot and stick control. Cool dynamics, very interesting.
Feeling-wise: Waves of emotions, spirit.

PS: At some spots he reminds of Denis Chambers very much...am I the only one? =)

Thanks Bernhard!!! An outstanding drummer and I guess a great guy.

Karl

Bernard, thanks for the post. But I am going to have to disagree with everyone and say the filming was better than the drumming. Sounded like a bunch of noise to me, some fast singles, and cowbell that didn't groove or really fit in. Where is this musicality you guys are hearing? I just listened to the first clip- i listen to the second one later. gotta run!

I agree. I heard a guy in town the other night making big waves with his combination of chops/intensity and a very deep groove and interesting, unique and refreshing musical approach thing going on that has REALLY impressed me and has certainly impressed much more than what I just watched which was still a performance of a talented individual no doubt. He is a Cuban drummer by the name of Gilberto Moreaux who's deep musical approach to the kit is going to scare the living daylights out of more than just the entire local drum community down the road mark my words.

Gilberto Moreaux: don't get, what this has to do with Ronald????? Or is this the only impressive drummer out there? Why not make a thread on him instead to compare?

By the way: Ronald chops are very impressive - and it was a chopsfest in some way to show off, this he did we all agreed seeing him live.

Playing with Stanley Clarke and George Duke, as he does at the moment:....well, needless to say more...

Simply making a comment that I hear lots of guys with great chops Bernhard but rarely individuals who have something really really special musically to offer to complete the package. Well I found this players chops impressive I did not get struck by the depth of his approach from a musical perspective. Recently I heard such an individual and was commented on the other posters impression of that in the video and my own current reference point regarding chops taken to the next level in a musical context as I just witnessed the other night. By the way Gilberto was a big star in his native Cuba for his musical abilities before coming to Canada to Vancouver to be exact. Pretty lucky for me and my fellow Vancouverites indeed i'd say.

Sorry to appear off topic but my comments were based on my impression of Ronald's playing compared to another approach of chops I recently heard that really stuck in my mind.

Ronald is a beast. He's so much more than just a "gospel drummer" imo

Best video update for a long time. Ronald is great, the chops, the musicality, it sounds fresh, at least for me. And ofcourse, he's coping Dennis Chambers in the 2nd video =) very sharp humour, only for those who know ;) very nice, I like t alot;)

I kinda have to hear him in other situations. To me, in this video, he was just playing around. I heard him with Stanley Clarke and trust me, you CANNOT find a more exciting drummer to listen to, other than Brian Blade.

AGREE....

I admit I thought he was little out of control on the MD fest DVD but that was an event where he was given the chance to cut loose....

I think hes an incredible talent its just that his solo ideas are kinda all over the place....I would like to see him stick to a theme and just play off it - which I'm sure he can do....

And yes with Stanley Clarke he shows more taste and musicality with his chops....

I would like to hear him with a band - those grooves he layed down in those vids were as phat as hell!! He must sound awesome in a musical context.

On re-watching this video, Bruner would have made a good candidate for the next mars volta drummer.

I dont know if he could beat out thomas pridgen though. I heard a sample on youtube and it was jaw-dropping, which was rare because im not really a fan of gospel drumming.
