The only thing I don't like about 3-up/2-down is the distance the ride sits from your reach. I had 2-up/2-down w/ the 2-up sitting directly above the kick. I was much more comfortable after moving the toms to the left and putting the ride down-low.

It's all about comfort and your ability to reach everything and play properly.

Experiment and move everything around regularly - eventually you'll figure out what is most comfortable. It doesn't matter if it looks goofy if it makes you more comfortable...so avoid being concerned w/ how it looks.

And just because you have that many toms doesnt mean you HAVE to use them... for instance I have a 6 pc kit 8" 10" 12" 16" tom's and 22" bass 14" snare.

I only play it as a 4pc
12" tom 16" floor and 22" bass with snare.. and when the time comes when I'm playing a style of music that requires higher or lower pitched drums I will use them but usually I keep it simple because as zam said the 3 toms really puts that ride far out there unless you play it over your floor like most metal drummers.

But if your ordering those toms your probably wanting to use them all(metal drummer?)

dont forget about your left side too- i recently slimmed my kit from a 5 piece to a 4 piece for a americana gig and fell in love with the setup, but saw my 10" sittin all by itself when i set back up at home, so i clamped it to my splash stand beside my hat and it opened up a whole new world of possibilities. very symmetrical. so i would do 2 up, two down, one left. unless you get a second snare of course.

heres my 7 piece setup ( Yamaha Absolute maple)...all the cymbals arent up , but this works for me. i'm lefty, so its backwards... the ride sits low off the 14 tom in a comportable postions. I have 2 splashes over the 12 and 10 toms and a 14 crash and 16 china to the left of the ride. another splash off the 8 tom.

I'd do something like this. That way you can sneak in a few hits on the 13 with the left hand, which leads itself to more unique and creative fills. I enjoy having a tom to the left of my hats. And you still have the monstrous 18 to the right, but not so far that you have to spin 90* to hit it.

Personally, I would do it like this. I got bored and had to add in my cymbals.

A 13" tom can be tuned low enough to sound good as a floor tom, especially if you've got the 16" behind it for back up :D

Also, with this set up, you don't have to twist far to reach the second floor tom.

And it would be nice to have the 18" and 16" on opposing sides so you could be playing anything and easily come down hard on them for some fat bass.

Looks comfy to me. I play this set up, but with no 18" and a 14" instead of the 13"... and a second bass drum on the way! :) :) :)

You could also try having the 16 and 18 as floors with the 13 off to your left, or the 13 between the racks and floors to make a line, or the 13 behind and in between the floors making a triangle. Those all seem like good set ups.

Happy drumming.

Well, it woud help if you were a little more specific.

Is it the rack toms? If they're too high, don't be afraid to tilt them a bit. I wouldn't imagine floor toms' height to be a problem, if you can't get them to be high enough you could always get tom mounts for your floor toms.
