Default Nylon Tip or Wood Tip

Maybe this has allready been discussed here, but the search didn't bring anything up.

Just a question about your preference - do you like Sitcks with Nylon Tip better, or Sticks with Wood Tip? And for which reason?

I personally hate Sticks with Nylon Tip because I don't like the Sound they create especially on cymbals. I also think that they don't feel as natural as Sticks that are made out of one piece of wood and nothing else.
I also heard that Nylon Tips often fly away while playing. Since I never ever use them, I don't know about that. Can anyone confirm?

My weapon of choice: Vic Firth American Classic 5A

Hallo!

Yeah, really don`t like nylon tips, too, they create a too bright definited sound! Just don`t like it, I prefer wood, wood and...er...wood!

I love nylon tips. I like the solid feel I get out of them. With wood, the stick feels solid unti it starts to chip or brake down, then it feels like a sponge and sounds like crap on my cymbals. With nylon I can get a consistant feel and sound every time. I used Regal Tip 5BX Nylons for years, they invented the nylon tip and the tips they make will not come off your stick at all while playing.
Only problem is I have moved up to the 2BX and they only make it with a wood tip :( so I have to suffer with wood now....

I use nylon tips. They do have a different sound on the cymbals than wood, but I wouldn't necessarily say worse. I actually like the glassy defined tone, especially what I get on my ride with my Pro Mark 707 Oak nylons. They have a spherical tip.

I've only seen a nylon tip come off once, but that was a cheap no-name stick. Plus, the tip doesnt chip

I only had it happen once to me and the stick that it happened to was one I played on for 3 years.

I like the Vic Firth 5As too.. I think it's just cause I've started with them that I like 'em so much. Yeah, I like wood just cause of the sound, just hate it when the tips chip, then its time for new sticks, cause then the sticks sound like crap and the rebound dies.

Wood, definantly. I only hate it when the tips chip, which isn't much of a problem. UNTIL I want to ply softly. THEN it's a problem. It feels and sound like one is trying to play through a piece of plastic. I hate that, the sound is so dull.

I prefer wood tips. Nylon does have a cool sound on cybmals, very defined, but I really don't like the way they sound on the drum heads.

its not only just nylon and wood tips but what brand too. i was playing regal tip for awhile and found it to make an almost darker sound on the cymbals than that of the vater i was using before that. the vaters kinda brought more of the ping out where the regal tip didn't. personally i like nylon more than wood just for durability but i keep some wood tips around just incase i feel like changing it up a little.

wood tips for me.. they have that warm sound with it.. even when i play hard rock its still wood for me.. i used to own this pair of sticks that are probably made of driftwood as theyre so soft and light they weigh like 1/4 of my 7a hickory sticks. one stick of the driftwood ones got chewed up by the dog so i have only one driftwood stick left, and i love it. i use it as my "ride stick" now..

I like nylon for the cymbal sound. They last longer and are usually the same price as the wood tip.. Using Vic Firth and havent had a tip come off yet. They dont get spongey sounding as they get used.

Wood tip for me ! I have cheap pairs of stick with nylon tips that I use only for practice - I dont like very much the sound that nylon produce on cymbals (too bright). Anyway, I still carry good pairs of nylon tip sticks in my stickbag because they are other tools that I could use depending of situation.

Wood is for me...Nylon tips have a bad sound and make marks on the heads and cymbals.

i say nylon, the wood tips sound horrible on rides in my opinion, dull sound and no ping.

I use wood just because i like the sound a lot more than nylon. Plus, everytime i use nylon the tips seem to break off after just one gig.

try VATER nylon tipped sticks dude, I haven't had a tip come off one yet, and I'm quite agressive when I get locked in.

I like the fusion model as it has a ball tip

For playing rock, or loud gigs, i use nylon. it seems to have a lot more bounce, so i can play faster and longer than i can with wood tips, which after a few hours make it feel like i'm doing all the work. Vic Firth 5ANs or 5BNs do it for me.

For more sensitive gigs like jazz, or something quiet and classy i'll use the peter erskine ride stick. it doesn't have the usual mushy sound on my ride and hats, but it is comparably much quieter.

I prefer wooden heads because of their durability. I dont have any problem with the heads chipping because i use the tip of the stick only to play the flat and bell of the cymbals, when i want a more stressed sound, i use the neck of the stick to play the edges of the hi-hats and my crashes. i find that wood tipped sticks last longer because the neck tends to be thicker. hope that helps. Promark 7A American hickory does it for me every time.

I prefer the sound and feel of wood tips. I personally don't like the sound that nylon produces on cymbals...just not my thing. I also ride the bell of my ride a lot, and I find that wood just works better for me there. I have nothing against nylon, they just arent my thing.

I use Vic Firth sticks exclusivley, playing mainly American Hickory 5As, 7As, Steve Gadd signature sticks, and Dave Weckl signature sticks. (the older ones, the red ones. i dont like the balance as much on his newer ones).

why not both?

i use a nylon in my right hand as the tips last long when hitting ride and hats. then i use a wood tip in my left becasue i tend to find i get through less coated snare heads. when practising i couldn't care less about if the sound is brighter or warmer, i just care about saving money...

i would use nylon if i had to make a decision based on sound.

I'd go for wood tips all the way.. The nylon tips themselves are durable, but the tips tend to just fly off alot. And they really dont sound good to me on cymbals, especially the ride. Too ringy. The wood feels more natural to play and also sound warmer on the cymbals..

Wood, the cymbal sound is so nice - more dark and I love the sound of the wood hitting the cymbal (if that makes sense!?). I don't really like the feel of nylon of drum heads either, but I do like the way they last longer that wooden sticks.

Just my 2 pence.

wood for sure. I have used promark nylon in the past and, maybe it was a brand specific problem, but the tips break really easy. Then the wood undernead is a small rounded point that just puts an indentation on your head with EVERY hit.

I haven't had this problem in a while. Nylon will help cut through the other instruments. It can be quite handy to keep a pair or two in your stick bag.
