Default AH! My snare must have fallen apart

Guess it's time to put it back together. =) That's everything you need to make your own beautiful 10 ply maple snare drum. DrumFoundry even gave me Saturday delivery.. w00t!

EDIT:
This is what it looks like now.

I went cheap on the snare wire for now.. Can pick up a better one later after it's all put together. Figured I'd get the bare minimums to make sure I don't screw up.

Finish testing:

That's the first pass with the aniline dye... it raised the grain as expected so it'll get sanded and get another coat once it dries. The actual drum will then get a nice automotive clear coat (with a pearl maybe...)

Beautiful finish already man. What's this company again? I might be interested in buying something like that.

http://www.drumfoundry.com

You'll want to visit ghostnote.net for building tips and read all the tutorials on the DF website. I got inspired after seeing the 10" tom that one of the guys here put together. Figured I didn't much need a tom so I'd start with a snare. Didn't reallize what all I was getting myself into. I bought some cheap shells on ebay to practice drilling on... Glad I did since my first attempts were not pretty. lol

Once I finish this one I'll be selling it for my cost.. Just wanted to have a project and figured this would be fun. It's going to be beautiful when I put the clear coat over the blue stain. =)

Got bored tonight so I went ahead and stained the shell.

Came out pretty good. I did accidentally get some stain on the inside.. argh!

Damn, that will look so good with a clear coat and those chrome tube lugs.

Yea I can't wait to get it to my paint guy to get it cleared so I can start drilling. The first picture of the dye is a test piece... My guestimate on the dye concentration was a little off on the shell itself so it ended up a touch lighter. No big deal though.

I like the lighter shade a bit better anyway; it seems like a bit more of the grain is visable.

Yea... that first piece I actually left the dye on there and didn't wipe it down at all so that's why the grain got hidden a bit. I'll go with just one coat on the drum, then seal it with just a bit of a tint to finish up a few spots. Hopefully I can get my paint guy to clear it early this next week.

It's not really a kit... just everything I picked out. For a 14x6 snare you're looking at close to 300 if you use tube lugs. You can shave a lot of money if you go with different lugs. (Tube lugs run about 6.5 each and I'm using 10 of them...)

However.. I believe most 10 ply maple snare drums are going to run you around 300-400 anyways... so... Might as well have one assembled by your own hands. She's going to get sealed today once I get a chance to run to the hardware store.

Updated pics:

Clear is on there but I need to wet sand and buff it to get the trash out. Then I'll put on a nice coat of automotive wax to keep her shiny. Looks a little dark with the crappy lighting here.

looks very nice man, good work. and its sooo shiny! the automotive wax may very well cause temporary blindness in the eyes of all who behold this work of art!

That's the plan... The clear is a bit trashy right now and has some runs since the final coat hadn't been sanded or anything. I'm going to mark out the lugs, etc right after I make these fajitas i've been lusting after all week.

Well figures I left my camera at work... All the holes are drilled... the lugs bolt in fine.. and I can even get the heads on without any issues. Can't believe I actually got it right on the first try... muahahaha

Ok... I normally don't like clear heads on snares but all they had at the place I take lessons from was an Aquarian Studio X so I put that on and an Ambassador hazy snare side. Holy hell this snare has some sound to it! I need to find a way to get some sound clips.

Cool, looks good. I prefer the tube lugs on your stave drum though. Actually, I prefer the stave drum in every manner. but I still like this blue one.
