Default New K Flat Ride

I recieved this Zildjian K Flat Ride a few days ago, which I ordered about two weeks ago from cymbalcellar.com. I really liked the sound clips of it on Cymbalcellar, and am glad to say I like it even more in person. It's my first "professional level" cymbal, and it beats my old Paiste PST-5 medium ride by a long shot (though the PST-5 was a good ride too.)

Pictures:

(Alone)
(The K logo was polished off by a previous owner, and now I am left with a K shaped discoloration)

(With kit)
(I put the heart there because it's Valentine's day.)

Also, I'm having a little trouble identifying the cymbal - the markings are not K custom, but I found no K series flat ride (aside from Constantinoples) on the Zildjian website. The Cymbalcellar person says it might have been a printing error, and the cymbal is actually a mislabeled K Custom flat ride (he compared the two and said the sounds were very similar.) Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Hey man, this is just my guess from the pics. I cant really tell what this "K" discoloration is, but I would say this cymbal looks an awful lot like my 18" A Flat top ride. Its got the same font, lathing and essential looks the same, albiet missing the "Zildjian A" logo. I know that 15 or so years ago, most of the zildjian fonts were the same, so it still could be a K. But its not a K custom, they have totally different lathing and hamering technique.

By the way, never trust the zildjian website, they only have the most recent cymbals there.

Thanks for your feedback.

It's definitely not an A, since a little bit of the K logo that was not polished off is still visible.

Hey, firstly:

This baby looks awesome. I love the sound of Flat Rides....the sound is so damn hoooot. =)
You have a cool choice, nice one.

and don`t be afraid , there is (was) a K Flat top Ride. As far as I know has Zildjian discontinued the K Flat Top Ride.
...and I found various other pics of the K Flat Ride in the internet, here is one of them:

have fun with it!

I think it may be an A. The lathing and type font on the cymbal is more common the A Zildjians. But hey, A or K or not even Zildjian at all, its sounds great and thats all that matters.

Thanks for the info, Karl.

Would anyone happen to know when the K flat top ride was discontinued?

nope....i am pretty sure that's a K.....the lathing does look similar to an A but i've seen those in person -- also the K is outlined in the cymbal as he said.

Currently it looks like K has a few flat rides

2 or 3 in the Constantinople line and 1 or 2 in the K Custom range

no just plain K's being currently produced from what I can tell. Here's a link to a couple pics of a K Custom Flatride from our very own Groove's new store here in Richmond:

(over on the right, it appears in both "cymbal pics" (Click to enlarge) bottom of the first, bottom left corner of the second)

I was actually going to buy that exact cymbal before you got to it. I ended up getting one on ebay and yes, it is actually a k flat ride. the k flat was made in the 80s and early to mid 90s as far as I have been able to gather. They were then discontinued, I believe due to disinterest. Again, it is an amazing cymbal.
