Default New Istanbul Mel Lewis 21" Ride...

hey friends!
I mentioned it several times and also made up threads about it: I wanted to have a cool Second Ride. I searched and found so many in the internet which I could easily check out on my next visit at Musik Produktiv (big musicstore in western Germany). For example the K Custom Left Side Ride, the K Custom Flat Ride, the A 19" Armand Ride, the 18" SFX Breakbeat Ride and the Sabian AA Raw Ride were a few candidates.
All were actually cool but not one of em had a character which impressed me over a long time. After getting very desperate (and yes, I asked myself the question: "Is there the perfect cymbal??") I just looked around on www.cymbalsonly.com
Bosphorus, Sabian stuff...and Istanbul. Listening to some sound clips, the usual thing. One day, suddenly I saw a cymbal called "Istanbul Agop 21" Mel Lewis Ride" with two rivets. Checked it out and...fell in love, really much in love. I called my father and I was actually hopeless that he`d buy it for me because he just bought the K Custom Dry Light Ride for me some time ago. First he said no...but after some talking...finally yes. So I chatted with Tony from cymbalsonly and so we bought it. The only bad thing is that I had NO chance to test it live in a music store...but okay, had to risk something.
Today I received it and well..........IT IS ABSOLUTLY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I definitly chose the right one.
It´s 2134 g light and thin, as I said with two rivets. It is lathed and hammered, traditional finish. It has a pretty flat profile...surprisingly. :-)
It has a great stick definition, yet it is very wahsy and sizzling. Has some awesome trashy qualities and it is very well crashable.

I also made samples of it but I have some problems with CD burning at the moment so the samples are coming soon!

Here are the pics of that baby...

thanks alot for all the help you gave me!!! =)

Why is it so much harder to find the right second ride than it is to find the right primary ride? Congratulations my friend. I hope that I'll get to hear you play it in person some day.

Congrats Karl

Welcome in the Istanbul family (I'm on the Mehmet side though). It's a nice ride and what's most important is that you're happy with your choice and with the sound.

Good choice Karl! I also own a 21" Mel Lewis ride with 2 rivets! It makes an excellent left side ride. I hung out with the AGOP guys at NAMM this year and I'll tell ya... their cymbals are smoking, both the AGOPS and the Alchemy's (the "rock" side of AGOP). THey are starting to get noticed now... they just recently signed Joey Waronker and Matt Chamberlain, and are working on another endorser who will be huge if it happens.
Anyway, I look forward to the soundfiles! Congrats!

Karl! Amazing ride. Those are absolute jazz jems. I know it must sound fantastic on it's own, but does is compliment your other pies?

Also, you have very good taste in pies! All of the ones you named off are amazing, especially that Breakbeat Ride. If I wasn't building my Bosphorus collection, I'd definitely shell out some cash for that.

That ride is such a beautiful sounding ride. There's one at a store in downtown vancouver that I tried out and it sounded amazing. Glad you found the right ride buddy.

Karl, if that ride sounds as good as it looks, you've got yourself a fine ride cymbal.

Question: Did Mel Lewis play this brand? I thought he was a K player.

thanks mate, it is a big and cool contrast with my K Custom which sounds so dry and without much wash. Not everybody may like such a contrast but actually it is cool.

Other than that, it works great with all my cymbals!

Hey Thomas (hope I am not wrong with your name!)

to be honest: I don`t know why at all. I just know that it was easy to find a nice primary Ride. I know what I wanted: a dry stick sound, dark overall and very good crashable.
Maybe it was so hard to find a left side Ride because it has to match with the other cymbals as well...

thanks for your comment mate!

Also thanks! I`m not sure if he played Zildjian but I think in his last days he played Istanbul cymbals...

Will try to upload my samples very very soon, I just have some big problems with my PC in the home "studio".

Holy Christ that ride sounds lovely. Really, really, really lovely. Perfect 'tsk' and sizzle with a hint of trashiness and dark character. I'm going to have to get myself one of those!

thanks for these nice replies! Glad you like the sound clips, more tunes will follow soon!

Mediocre: I can really really recommend that cymbal. Damn, how right I was about it though I had no chance to test it before. haha...

seriously: If you have a chance to try it...do this. I think you`ll love it even more when playing it live.

thanks again for all the kind words!

a true beauty man! there are no cymbals but Turkish cymbals :). you wrote that it's not Bosphorus... well, it kinda is, cause that's basically the same 'receipt', they were one company before 1996 (a situation like with Zildjian and Sabian). COOL COOL COOL!

Ahhh Karl what did i tell you. You would love this ride! Gotta say though i like the quality of your recordings more than Tony's. Have you tried it without the rivets yet? It still has an amazing sizzle to it! And like Stu used to say suddenly i dont like your snare sound for jazz...sorry! :-) I would personally use the mel lewis as my main ride. You must put up some samples of playing with your whole kit, so we can hear how they contrast. And finally your kit is 'complete'... for now.

no, it is an HHX Evolution Hi-hat, 14". I picked it up when I bought my Tama 1 1/2 years ago. First I wanted to go with an AAX Stage Hi-hat but then I realised how beautiful the Evolution hats actually sound. I can really recommend it, it is pretty versatile and it has a very spicy chick sound, not agressive but really short. I like it, crisp sound, bright, dark undertones...you know. Cool cymbal(s)!

Haha, thanks so much for your comment...oh, and not just for the post, also for your great help and your opinion you wrote over PM about that baby. Thanks!
and no, havn`t taken the rivets out yet, I was too busy with it the last days... =)

PS: haha, don`t provoke me to buy a new Snare drum...no, seriously: I personally like the sound...but that is a pure personal preference!

cheers friends!

The annoying this is, I found a shop selling a pair of 13" Mel Lewis hats a couple of years ago, I had my eye on them for a little while (same place I bought my ride) but in the end went with 14" Sabian HH Hats. Part of me thinks that the Mel's would have been a stunning choice. I do really, really like my Sabians though.

mhhh yeah, I`m in a pretty similar situation now. I now realized that there are sooo many Istanbul Hi-hat beauties. and I`m seriously thinking about selling my HHX and getting a new Istanbul from cymbalsonly. Damn, I think I`ll do that.

haha...I`m not sure, if I do it seriously, I`ll tell you all, just in the case if you are interessted.

So yeah...re-recorded "Bright Swing Times" today...to show my progress (haha, I hope I made some progress) and the new Mel Lewis Ride. So finally you can also listen to the contrast. So just click ther following link and search for the song "Bright Swing Times". More songs will follow!

so, yes, here it is (I didn`t make the final mix-down yet though):

What do you think about it...and my playing?

Karl thanks for the PM. That ride sounds great. Its a little brighter than my 22inch Jazz Master series, but I would love to have that as a 2nd ride. Keep up the good work.

JOhnny

P.S. I wanted to ask you what size sticks, and wood tip or plastic tip, were you using. It sounded wooden but I was curious.

Karl now that your kit is complete (for the time being) you gotta take some more photos, i love looking at your kit! Take it outside, just as a change to the white brick wall ;-)

Also whats with your myspace saying "bright swing tunes' has 0 plays. It has at least 17 by me.

thanks so much! Well, I don`t know if I do this...at the moment we also have snow here and it is just an awful weather...mhhh, will try to get some better pics of it in the inside. Or I make a sunny backround with photoshop...haha :-D

oh, and the myspace thing: I didn`t mention it yet, I deleted the first version of Bright Swing Times, re-recorded it two days ago or so with the Mel Lewis but I noticed that the bass, toms were overpowering, so I recorded it the third time yesterday evening and adjusted my mixer. Now it should sound a bit better.
I`ll also re-record the other stuff soon, just to show my Ride, what I can improve and what I HAVE improved in the last time.

thanks for asking!

Karl

thanks, it is definitly one good cymbal with such an awesome sound. I can really recommend it. Also I have to say that the sound clips on cymbalsonly are amazing. You can "feel" how it`ll feel to play on that cymbal, the sound is soo similar to the sound on Tony`s clips. Can`t go wrong. =)

...lol, and I can just second his comment that it`s playing and sounding like butter.
