Default Budget Acoustic foam?

Anyone know of a place I can purchase acoustic foam for my practice room?

I need roughly 15 panels and 6-8 Bass traps.

I can't justify spending $250 for foam; I know some RF/Sound eng worked hard figuring out the wavelengths and design (LOL), but it's a ripoff....and I'm an RF engineer. : )

Thanks, folks!

I have never seen that stuff cheap. I play in a 10x10 concrete room in my basement. all 4 walls are lines with moving blankets. They cheap and can be found at most Home Depot stores. This is not sound proofing but it will kill any unwanted reflections in the room. I did this because it was just too loud in there, being all concrete.

LOL, sounds alot like my room.

I've got moving blankets, but the bass freqs are killing the sound.

Thanks for the input!

I know you can build bass traps for cheap. You could probably find cheaper alternatives to the other stuff as well. I don't have this info personally, but you could start by searching the Tape Op forums. I know it has been discussed there many times.

What you need is rigid 2'x4' fiberglass panels and wrap them in fabric from the clearance rack at a fabric store.

just be careful about flammability issues. remember what happened in Rhode Island at the Great White show?? one the primary causes of the fire spreading so quickly was because they used cheap foam to line the walls and ceiling of the nightclub.

I know that you'll probably never have a couple hundred people in your practice room, and you're unlikely to set off pyrotechnics in there either - but a cigarette or candle or lit match can get something started too - I'm not saying don't do it - just be careful and aware of what you're surrounding yourself with.

Your welcome! If you are real interested in that stuff you should get a subscription to the Tape Op mag. It's free! It's my favorite mag and that is one of my favorite forums. You can easily spend an afternoon reading about one topic (i.e. snare drum miking).
