Default Head Suggestions for a Starclassic Birch?

Hey Everyone. With a bit of christmas cash, i am going to put new batter heads on my starclassic. Right now I have Pinstripes, and they do work pretty good. Although i do know that they kill some of the tone, but there is pleanty left in there to be heard. What do you recommend for heads? I play rock and want the clean tone i am used to -- love the projection of the birch. I will change out the resonant heads within the next month or two and will go with all clear ambassadors. I am open to any brand of head, although i have tried the remo powerstroke 3's and do not like them. Here are what I am thinking:

- pinstripes
- clear emperors
- clear ambassadors
- G1's or G2's (clear)
- EC2's
- Aquarian Super II's?
- Aquarian Performance II's?

I'd go with G1's if you don't play crazy hard, G2's if you do. Evans Resonant Glass for the bottoms. Steer clear of the Pinstripes at all costs, unless you want your beautiful drums to sound like a cow carcass slamming into a dumpster.

well, that is great news because i have pins on there now (bought them used and they had pins on em) and they sound incredible. So if the G2's will improve that sound (i am a heavy hitter) then i am in seventh heaven!

anyone else for the G2's?

And how do these differ from the emperors?

It's a tried and tested combination, it may not be *that* out there, but another vote for G2s over G1s. I've never seen a situation on this forum or elsewhere where people i) complain about the sound ii) complain about the durability or iii) wish they'd tried XYZ heads first. Going with coated might be an idea just to perhaps stifle some of that birch brightness perhaps? The important thing is that these are REALLY quality drums and in the end, provided you can tune, any head will probably sound good on it. Except maybe Hydraulics...

I'd say G2 batters and either the Resonant Glass or G1 for reso's. Evans has a tendency to give a little lower tone than remo, if you want brighter go with the Emperors from Remo. If you're a heavy hitter I'd stay with a 2 ply for durability.

G2's over G1's are the winner as i see it. I did not plan on getting respnant heads, but maybe i should -- just to ....well, just to do it. :) I love this kit a LOT and the brightness of the birch is part of that reason. But i am one to listen to my peers, so the G2's have it.

Thanks guys!

G2's over G1's or G2's over Resonant Glass. I just changed from a G1 on reso to the Glass. The 'new' sound is a bit more focused with the Glass compared to the G1. Not quite as open. My resos are tuned pretty tight.

Let us know what you find.

I have used coated and clear G2 heads over the last 2 years. But, for the 15 plus before that I used mostly (75%) coated emperors. I play fairly hard, so it suits me.
I plan on switching back to the emperors. Ocasionally I will use pinstripes or clear emperors.

Put em on today and tuned them up to fourths. They tuned very easily and i quickly found the exact pitch i was looking for. I hit them with my mallets and WOW DID THEY SING!!!!! I have not played them yet as they quickly went back into the cases ready for the gig on sunday (new years eve). What's better, is that they will be completely mic'd for this gig.... cant wait!

Hey Elvis!

Do you find that the Birch drums are brighter than your DWs?

Hey Mike...

without a doubt they are brighter. The difference in wood is very apparent between my DW's and starclassics. I will admit that right now i favor the flavor of the starclassics -- that bright, punch tone is absolutely a pleasure to play. I love it. If i ordered a DW, i would seriously consider birch.

Can't go wrong with a quality kit with G2's over G1's, you just can't go wrong.

My Starclassic Performer kit has G2's over stock resos currently. I love the sound. Sounds wonderful thru a PA and they record beautifully. I will soon replace the stock heads with G1's.

Also I just received my custom pork pie kit and I ordered G2's for them as well. I am anxious to AB the maple PP against the birch Starclassics.

Will do! I use a DW set at church and they have clear G2's on them. They simply sound amazing , the drums just sing.

The stock heads on SCP's are rebranded G2's over G1's.

Finally. I've been posting that since Saturday or so
