Default Drum Teacher Directory

Here's an idea. The August 1990 Modern Drummer magazine included an international drum teacher directory. Then later published it as a separate publication. I remember getting it and looking up the drum teachers that were in my state and the surrounding states. I even contacted one or two of them for lessons. When I travel, I often look in the phone book to see if there are any drum teachers whose names I recognize. I'm sure many others do the same.

My idea is to have an online drum teacher directory on Drummerworld. In just the past few weeks I have seen postings here looking for teachers in New York and Boston. A directory would be a great place to look. I have had students of mine move to other states and cities. It would be nice to have a listing of instructors to reference for that reason. I know there are other teacher listings on the internet, but Drummerworld is one of the most popular sites out there.

Here's some info that could be included.
Location: Separated by County, State, Province etc.
Years of Teaching Experience
Formal Education
Articles, Books, or Videos published
Levels Taught - Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Styles Taught
Other Percussion Instruments Taught - Congas, Mallet Percussion, etc.
Areas of Emphasis
Teaching Full Time/Part Time
Average Number of Students per Week
Length of lessons offered - 30, 45, 60 min.

The drum teachers could have a free listing or pay a small amount per year. I think the lower the price the more teachers would sign up. But of course, Drummerworld still needs to pay the bills and that it completely understandable.

Please let me know what you think.

Jeff

Yes - a good idea.

If we do this, we will have 15000 names there.....

Must be careful with these decisions so....

Thank you for being so receptive to the idea. Yes, I can see the names building up quickly. But if it is searchable by county, city, and state (or province) it will be easier to access.

As far as having too many names, the listing could be renewed by the teacher every year or even 6 months. This would automatically eliminate listings of those who have moved, gone on the road, quit teaching etc...

I know this would be a resource that I would use while on the road. I would be happy to contribute in anyway that would be helpful.

It's an awesome idea, but it might just merit it's own website, a partner to drummerworld if you will. Even though the forums and the clinic section are good educational tools, it would be wonderful to consolidate all the methods and ideas into an educational website with a teracher list as well. The problem is it's a damn huge undertaking, but it would pay for itself if you had a bit of advertising. Imagine how many kids post "hay guyz how do i get better?"

You could just say "hay bro no problem just go to this website www.drummerworldschool.com/awesome" or something like that. It could have suggested listening, approaches to instructional books(syncopation, stick control, new breed," style analysis, hand technique and teacher listings.

The pros-Tons of free content(the mods can just take good, non-copyrighted stuff from the forums and internet) and an easy response to the infinite posts of "i don't know what to do"

Cons-Immense amount of work to create.

I'd love to put the project together but I'm pretty young and working and going to school. If Bernhard had a trusted friend who might want to take on the project, it could kind of be a one-stop free drum info place.

I dunno, it just seems like the the drum teacher directory would be such a big undertaking that you might as well nuild an educational site around it. But i've been throwing these ideas around for a while, so I dunno if they totally work. Well, I've typed them out, might as well keep em.

Jeff
Or if it's searchable by country, province, region, county, city, then that would perhaps be more applicable to all...

I stand corrected. I meant to type "country," not "county."

The teacher's would put their own names in voluntarily. That way only the teachers who want to be listed will have their names and contact info online. It would be a listing of a lot of semi-pro teachers, but I assume some bigger names would want to be listed as well.

in terms of arrangement i think it should be set up in a classifieds style listing like gumtree.com. latest entries on top and when a teacher posts they recieve a message that they will need to repost their advert every three or six months as old adverts will be automatically deleted. this will keep the database fresh and small. this idea occoured to me as i was flipping through a modern drummer from 1990. there was a three page special on united states drum teachers and i wondered how many of them still teach or if any of those phone numbers are still accurate.

This is such a great idea.Sure, a huge undertaking, but the payoff would be worth it! Not only could would be students find a teacher, it could prove to be a vast resourse for educators to interact and share teaching philosophies, experiences and support.....I'm in!

I love the idea. I would hate to approve anything that makes more work for Bernhard, but if it could be self-sustaining and only took a little bit to set up, it would be great.

My thoughts exactly. Great for teachers as well as students. Anything that helps hook up teachers and students is a good thing. I'm interested to see where this goes.

Well, I love the idea and the concept of it!
It will be definitly very very useful for many drummers who search....one question: Will there be also a list including teachers from european countries?? Because I`m from Germany and here are also so many people who search good teachers.

well i believe that this kind of searchable online directory is a bit overdue, actually. i think it would also be benificial if those using the list to find teachers had a way of reporting back that the information given is no longer valid if they find that the information presented is no longer accurate.

i think we should make it

THE DRUMMERS DIRECTORY

with sub categories of:

DRUM TEACHERS

SUBSTITUTE DRUMMERS

SESSION DRUMMERS

each would come with a form to be filled in online with radio buttons and fields relevant to the category and then the ads sorted by city. entries should remain valid for 6 months. then near expiry the poster is sent an automatic email encouraging them to refresh the advert and edit it (if their address or prices etc have changed). if they do not refresh the ad then it is removed from the database.

some fields/radio buttons that i think shoul be in each category are:

Drum teachers
  • city and country
  • price from... and what currency
  • area they work (ie south west london)
  • own experience
Substitute drummers
  • city and country
  • styles covered
  • price range (i'll play for free, 0 - 100, 100 - 200, 200+)
  • area they work
  • own transport
  • own kit
  • experience
session drummers
  • similar to the session ads.
later on there can even be a rating system like on ebay. be the first to rate this artist. customers who found this rating helpful etc etc.

To make it easier, possibly the drum teacher listing can include;
Willing to sub: Yes, No
If so, price, area, and styles

That would make it easier to design.

This looks like a good way to handle it, Nutha. And it is a very good idea.

But it would be a huge undertaking. Someone might need to be paid some small amount to get it together and keep it updated. Any sort of directory charges something to maintain itself, particularly if it's listing for-profit businesses, which is what a drum instructor is (okay, maybe not HUGELY profitable).

I would suggest anyone who wants to be listed should pay $20 to $50 a year. If you're a serious instructor, this isn't a huge amount and is just a cost of doing business. It would help weed out the inexperienced and wankers who aren't really teachers but just want to be listed for ego purposes.

Yes I think its a damn good idea too, but I think what deathmetalconga said is worth considering as well, there's always a risk of people saying they can teach when they've in actual fact been playing for six months. This was the case at my local music store as someone who had been only playing for a few months actually applied to become a teacher there...

This is an awsome idea, especially since drum teachers are only otherwise spread from person to person. I think there are some great ideas here. Bernhard, I really think that Jeff has a great idea here and things to combat the overload of names could help. Also the frequent (even bi-monthly) updates, or even a comfirmation by its publisher could keep the ads to serious teachers. I also like the rating idea, the only difficulty is then that it can get subjective and/or competitive with poor voting rival teachers etc. Some kinks to work out by it could be a good opportunity. Even a video greeting could work to verify that the teacher is serious and a decent player...hope this turns out well!

This is a fantastic idea, i like Nuthas idea. Your right though this could be a whole website but if it was still on drummerworld, then this place is just going to grow grow grow! Having country etc is also the best way to do it i think. Great idea jeff. And a payment is nessary i think because otherwise yes Tim everyone is a teacher, $20US for 4months is enough i think or something like that.

Hi All;

As I mentioned to Jeff in his email which he sent to me, it is an idea long overdue, and I have been working on such a project and website for a few months now, with a registered domain and address. The main page will be on line in a few days, detailing the mission, all of which are all similiar to what have been discussed in this thread.

As you may know, there are a couple sites out there already, but this one will be geared specifically to drummers only. The main page and details will be up shortly, and I will post the link and info when it "goes live"!

I think everyone will benefit from this website, and I will be back soon with the link and detailed announcement!

All the Best

As you may know, there are a couple sites out there already, but this one will be geared specifically to drummers only. The main page and details will be up shortly, and I will post the link and info when it "goes live"!

I think everyone will benefit from this website, and I will be back soon with the link and detailed announcement!

All the Best
