Default Starting 2007 with a bang!

It is with great pleasure that I announce my endorsement of Ludwig Drums, effective January 1, 2007!

I've always had an affection for Ludwig's 50s-70s era drums, and have owned several Ludwig kits and dozens of their snares throughout my career. Their newer drums are simply outstanding, and possess the traditional Ludwig vibe. So in March, when the next Weird Al tour begins, I'll be using a 5-pc Classic maple kit with a standard issue 6˝" Supra.

Ludwig is enjoying a long-overdue renaissance, and there are cool things on the horizon. It's a great time to be on board with them, and to say that this is an exciting move for me is an understatement!

Okay, for those who want to know 'Wassup wit dat?', I'm way ahead of ya. Here are the answers to your inevitable questions:

Hey, weren't you using Impact drums for, like, a million years? Why the change? Do their drums suck now?
I've been playing Impact for just over 21 years, and the drums have always been great. Over the last several years though, I've played some wood kits in various circumstances, and realized I'd been missing that feel. So it's not that Impact did anything wrong or the drums suddenly don't sound good - it's just my desire to play wood again.

So, why Ludwig?
Why not?

No, really, wouldn't DW like to have you on their roster?
The door's always been open there, and anyone would be proud to be an endorser. Frankly, they're probably not in a hurry to talk to me since I dropped their pedal in favor of Trick's new pedal.

Well, what about Trick? They'd probably love to have you play their drums!
Their drums are pretty cool. The fact is, I like Ludwig for a lot of reasons.

But Ludwig is just cranking out those budget kits that I see at Guitar Center and Sam Ash and all over the web. Please tell me that a talented, handsome pro like yourself isn't endorsing those!?
Actually, the top of the line Accents are pretty sweet kits for the money, probably the best value going right now. However, I will be using Ludwig's Classic Maple drums. I got a Classic Maple kit a few years ago that's a real treat to play, and that was a factor in both my wanting to go back to wood, and in choosing Ludwig. The punch and warmth is like Ludwig's classic rock sound, which I love.

Did you consider a custom builder?
Companies like Pork Pie, Spaun, GMS et al produce some great-sounding, great-looking drums. But in case it's not clear by now, I really like Ludwig. My first two kits (back in the 60s) were a transition kit and a Standard kit, and I've owned additional Ludwig gear over the years. I currently have 6 Ludwig kits and 15 Ludwig snares, so signing with them was a very natural step for me.

How about Yamatamapearlapex?
All nice drums, I particularly like the Yamaha Oak series. At the risk of being redundant, I will say again: I really like Ludwig.

Have you seen the posts in DrumForum.org about the QC problems a member is having with his new Ludwig drums?
I saw those posts, and I'd have been just as mad. But Ludwig is hardly the only drum company to have a glitch now and then, and if I avoided every company that ever had a problem, there'd be nothing left for me to use! Reputations are important, and I'm sure that Ludwig will step up and make things right for him.

You think you're pretty clever with this question & answer thing, don't you!
Sheesh... next question please.

Can you get me a discount on a Fab Four kit?
Ludwig charges me 10% over list price. They told me that's the deal all the other pros get, and I didn't want to rock the boat, so I agreed to it. So, your cost on the kit will be about $3,700. PayPal is fine, and don't forget to add 3% for the fees! :)

Are you kidding me??
What do you think?

Wow! Very impressive. I'm looking for a giggin' kit at the moment, and Ludwig is also high on my list. I must say, however, that I am quite impressed. I hope the change works out great for you.

That's great. And I agree about the nwe Ludwigs being a big step forward over the one's they made in 'the dark years'. I could really go a Fab-Four kit actually. Hell, it's probably in my "top 5 kits I want" list.

Hi Bermuda

Great to hear that.....

Is it Todd Trent taking care of you? A great Ludwig guy (working for Ringo, Jim Riley and many others for many years)

All the best with this deal - you will be happy.

Did I read right, that Ludwig charges you 10% over list, or did I miss the joke. Retailers sell for half of list???

No 10% over list is correct, because pro drummers are difficult to handle.

Ha ha! You made me laugh out loud Bermuda! Thank's for the entertaining dialogue. I play a Ludwig Accent Pro Custom in Phillipine Mahogany (I know...yuck). At the time it was the biggest bang for my buck and I am generally happy with them. I would like to trade up to maple shells eventually. I would have already done this if I was a single man. My wife is still upset about the electronic kit I purchased for practice. Oh well, what can a guy do? Anyways, congratulations and I hope you enjoy them.

I'm looking mournfully at Bemuda's synthetic tubs fading into history....getting wistful already...

Actually, I am looking forward to pic of the new kit! I hope Ludwig does rise out of the ashes of past difficulties.

I know they are enjoying sucess with the vistalite sales. But they need to resolidify themselves in the drum market.

Bermuda joins reverend Al Van Halen on Ludwig tubs....

(I can almost hear the Impact CEO weeping in his wheaties about now)

Impact enjoyed a very long run. Many artists change companies like people change socks. And they put up such a front about it. "I found my voice...blah blah blah..."

After so many years, change needs no explanation really. Everyone changes taste over time, or just wants some shiny new stuff.

Very cool!

I walked into a GC about a year ago and asked where all the Ludwigs were. They looked at me like I was crazy or something. I have noticed they have started carrying them recently.

The classic maple drums look real nice and sound great. It's good to see the company getting their act together again. They seemed to be resting on their laurels and trying to make it on their past reputation.

I played two Ludwig kits back in the day and own DWs now. I might have to give them another chance.

I've also noticed a lot of drummers on the pop country scene driving Ludwigs. Quite a few Bonham style kits. Man, who'd have thought that?

Congatts on your new endorsement.

Please tell me you're joking...

Ludwig has always made their wood shells (although not for their Accent series kits.) Fibes (what's left of them) and DW are the only other US drum companies to make their own wood shells, although that's a fairly new thing for both of them. Fibes was using Jasper shells until a few years ago, and DW was using Keller until about 8 years ago (and still does on larger kick drums.) FWIW, Gretsch was also using Jasper, and now uses Keller.

Since slingerland was working on reviving it's name (with keller) , and other companies keep getting handed off, I wasn't sure (other than DW) who actually did their own stuff anymore. Yamaha is supposed to make Rogers drum products available. Taiwan shells? Yamaha shells? Keller??

In Slingerland's case, they were handed off many times and there were periods where the drums weren't being produced at all (save for some snares marketed through musicyo.com)

Ludwig has hung in there all along, through thick and thin.

Lucky perhaps, but I suspect my 26+ years with a multi-platinum artist had something to do with it, too! I'll give a healthy level of exposure to Ludwig, which is what they look for in an endorsement.

Yes....26+ years with an artist, and with a really good album release will definitely help out getting endorsements. It has nothing to do with luck. Ludwig witnessed a good opportunity for exposure and jumped. It will be a good deal for Ludwig and for bermuda.

Good job on the endorsement, bermuda!

That's just not enough for Pearl....not quite enough exposure...

Ludwig and their lower standards of what constitutes public visibility... ;)

Bermuda will be joining some storied company endorsing ludwig....

To be fair, it's certainly not my first drum company endorsement, although I'll admit the previous two were under the radar compared to the large companies. Corder (ex-Fibes) from '84-'85 and Impact from '85-'06 were hardly household names. And I've maintained endorsements for all of my drum-related gear with companies like Sabian, Evans (prior to that, Remo,) Vic Firth, Trick (prior to that, DW,) Rhythm Tech, Shure, and more.

But had I been less visible in the past, our latest top-10 album and single would definitely have opened some doors. With Ludwig, the door had actually been open for years... I only just walked through it. In fact, every large company - and almost every small one - made sure that I knew I was welcome if I was ever looking for a new company. That's definitely flattering!

I didn't mean to imply that you could just now get an endorsement. I didn't mean that in anyway. I was just stating what you basically did. That the top 10 album/single helped out a bit.

And that's cool that the companies were wanting you to try out their gear. That is flattering. You made a good choice though, Ludwig is good.

I took delivery of my new touring kit today:

These drums will actually go on my rack, not on stands. It's hard to see the snare, but it's a standard 6˝ Supra. Toms are 8x12, 9x13 & 14x16", and the kick is 16x22". I may put maple hoops on the kick, just to help keep the original hoops in good shape.

The finish is Arctic White (painted) and the clear coat has subtle sparkling, not unlike the old Standard series 'mist' finishes. So basically the kit looks creamy white, until the light hits it. It's almost an irridescent effect, unfortunately not very evident in this photo:

This is a very pretty kit in person. I can't wait to subject it to the rigors of the road!

I would imagine that under various stage lights your kit will look positively magical and probably abit surreal. Alot of times when I go to concerts I can't tell exactly what colour the drum kit is because of all the interpretive lighting. In the 1980s this was made all the worse by the fact that so many drummers played kits that had rather boring "natural wood" finishes that seemed abit featureless when played under stage strobes. I'm glad that more colourful finishes made their return in the 1990s; makes things more interesting...Congradulations to your endorsement of Ludwig Drums, bravo! God bless,Bermuda...
