Default Coating wearing off

About 2 months ago I put a coated Remo Ambassador on my snare. The coating did not wear off very much when I played with normal sticks, but when I played for about an hour with brushes, a great deal of coating came off, leaving a large smooth spot in the center of the head. The brushes I used were Vic Firth jazz brushes, which have metal bristles.

I am wondering if it is normal for coating to wear off so quickly when played with brushes, or if there is something wrong with my technique, or my equipment, which is causing the coating to wear away.

Remo coatings are known for this, it happens to me everytime...
Use Evans heads you'll have no such problems. simple as that!

And if you use AQUARIAN heads, you'll have even less problem with coating than with REMO or even EVANS ;-)

Remo heads are partial to losing their coating quickly in my experience; especially the emperor models.

Evans' coating lasts much longer than Remo's, and that is the reason I'm going back to them next time I need to change heads.

I think Aquarian's coating is also pretty good, however I haven't actually played them

I'm an Evans user and I still can't get the coating to wear off their heads.
I've also used Aquarian before...either would be your best bet.

The Evans heads wear down to pretty smooth eventually, just takes longer than Remos in my experience.

Remo is off my list. It's Aquarian or Evans for me.

I had the same problems with remo coatings, and as the other threads state: consistancy.

All coated heads i have used, the coating has come off within a couple months. I do think evans coatings last longer, but they all come off eventually.

On our marching snares, we have bullet proof heads (not sure if thats for all marching heads or not), but there are tiny little grooves in a pattern built into the head, but in the middle of my drum, it is completley smooth, so i guess it even happens to the toughest of heads.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I'll be sure to try out other brands next time I buy heads.

does the coating wear off on every coated remo head?

im looking at getting the coated ambassadors next time i get new heads, will the coating come off quickly on those?

if it will, whats the closest model to the coated ambassador in evans or aqaurian.

im looking for heads that will last the longest

Yes and the Ambassadors are the worst of them...

The Evans equivalent is the G1 and Aquarian is the satin finish texture coated but Aquarian seem a little bit thicker than ambs or G1 then you can opt for coated hi-frequency which is thinner than satin finish texture coated.

Yes I agree that Emperors ware off the easiest. I had mine start to ware off in one week playing with regular sticks. But i kind of like the look it gives to the overall set when the coating start to ware off.

I don't know that there is anything wrong with your technique or your heads. This is pretty much normal fare for the Remo coating. and it doesn't bother me at all because I like the classic sound of the Ambassador heads. If you ever see a picture of Carl Palmer in the studio, almost all of the coating was worn off his Remo heads, and I am not talking about a small area; it was probably somewhere around 6 to 8 inches on his snare drum!

I am buying the sound I like not something which I demand to be perfect. Most pro drummers don't like to change heads because the old heads have broken in and stretched to a very pleasing sound! It is kind of like a new engine in a car; it doesn't run right until all of the parts have worn together. Then the engine is "broken-in".
