Default Time Manipulation Drum Book

I wrote a drum book called Time Manipulation, that was published 25 years ago.
Many people thought it was a great book, but it's been out of print for many years.

I'm in the last stages of a revised and improved edition, and I will make it available again soon.

Note : it is now available worldwide http://tinyurl.com/y6ua5pup

It is suitable for drummers of all levels, and its purpose is to work on coordination in a groove context.

Summary of Sections
Section 1 - Basic Patterns
Section 2 - Polyrhythmic Patterns
Section 3 - Anticipations
Section 4 - Beat Displacements
Section 5 - Basic & Polyrhythmic 12/8 Patterns
Section 6 - Swing & Shuffle Feels
Section 7 - Rhythmic Modulations

140 pages, including explanations and many examples.
Sixty-eighth 16-bar groove exercises, meant to be practiced with numerous cymbal ostinatos.
147 examples will be available in audio and/or video versions.

Time Manipulation Blog

Thanks for your attention!
Alain

Excerpt from Section 2 - Polyrhythmic Patterns

In Section 2, new patterns are formed using some of the basic rhythmic figures seen in Section 1.
This is done in a musical way, using polyrhythms that are ubiquitous in many musical traditions, as well as in current styles.

• I suggest to play the 16 patterns of the page in sequence, each measure being played twice.
• You can work on separate patterns at first, but playing the patterns in sequence is what brings out the real strength of the exercices.

Hi and thanks for subscribing to my newsletter! Let me know if you downloaded the examples and if you enjoy them!

The book is basically ready to print, I made draft copies at home, but I need to make the cover, or to have it made, as I won't use the previous one.

Then I'll have do a draft printing at the printer, and then I plan to make it available to interested people worldwide through the internet.
Difficult to tell you exactly how long it will take, at this point, but I'll do it as fast as I can!

Thanks for your interest!
Alain

It looks promising mate. Im assuming the patterns get more complex and you go i to snare displacement etc? Very good start, easy to understand and progresses as the excersise develops.

Got some good beats for sure. Just FYI - In the recorded example on your blog, #8 is misplayed - you play #12.

Yes, there is 21 beat displacement exercises in the 4th section, and I think everything is progressive, logical and realistic!

Section 3 is meant to work on anticipations.
Snare-drum and bass-drum notes that are played accented right before a beat, when they are followed by a rest, can be considered as being an anticipation of that beat.
  • I suggest to play the 16 patterns of the page in sequence, each measure being played twice.
  • You can work on separate patterns at first, but playing the patterns in sequence is what brings out the real strength of the exercices.

Section 4 is meant to approach beat displacements in a simple and progressive way.
It includes three sets of seven exercises, and I feel they are one of the most interesting series of exercises in the book.
  • I suggest to play the 16 patterns of the page in sequence, each measure being played twice.
  • You can work on separate patterns at first, but playing the patterns in sequence is what brings out the real strength of the exercices.

Section 5 from Time Manipulation Drum Book is in 12/8 and will let you work on both basic and polyrhythmic patterns.
This example shows Exercise 58, which is an application of the "3 over 2" polyrhythm. Additionally it sounds very good and there's other amazing exercises in the book!

Section 7 of Time Manipulation Drum Book shows a number of polyrhythmic ostinatos examples, as well as metric and polymetric modulations.
The next three examples demonstrate implied metric modulations, which are to be played while continuing to feel the pulse of the first line.
In the first example, all the values of the first line are transformed into dotted values in the second one.
  • The examples are played twice before going on to the next.
  • You can count the beats in the second line, the handclaps heard in the mp3 are there to help you.

Back cover quotes:

Time Manipulation provides a mean for the student and teacher, to systemically progress through a wealth of rhythmic exercises and disciplines. Alain Rieder has carefully assembled and designed this collection of beats (with various accompanying ostinatos), and it's suitable for drummers of most every level. As an adjunct to a musical course of study, I can recommend it.
Peter Erskine

I find that Alain's book "Time Manipulation" can help in many different areas such as reading, coordinated independance and phrasing. Used as a tool in a complete organized practice routine, I recommend it.
Dave Weckl

"Time Manipulation offers one-bar patterns that are very realistic in terms of potential for everyday use. They progress logically in difficulty from simple quarter and 8th-note patterns to 16th notes and 12/8 time. Because it starts with a basic 8th-note ride pattern, the book can be used as a beginning drumset method. By the end, the student will have a good command of a variety of time feels."
Rick Mattingly, Modern Drummer Magazine

"Masterfully written by an author willing to share the message of contemporary groove playing, in the most direct way possible, this book is a pleasure to work on."
Alain Gozzo, Batteur Magazine

You had me at exercise 7.

The first few are good exercises but when I play with displacement I usually shift an entire beat or groove a 16th note or something to make it weird, then I'll jump back. Or do that with a fill to change it.

Does this book get into more advanced areas like that? Or does it including modulation AND displacement simultaneously?

Difficult to answer your question, but there’s some really advanced concepts in the book.
There’s a whole section on beat displacements, and the object is to make it simple to work on that kind of stuff. Then you may feel that working on the exercises make it easier to expand on the concepts you’re already using.

There’s some pretty abstract displacements in the 7th section on rhythmic modulations.

I hope I answered your question, feel free to ask more!

On the front cover:

Time Manipulation Drum Book is both innovative and rooted in tradition. It is designed to work on coordination in a groove context. It makes it easy to approach essential rhythmic concepts – from the most basic to the most complex – in a realistic, progressive and systematic way. Aimed at drummers of most levels, the book has an open structure that lets you develop your own ideas and creativity.

On the back cover:

Time Manipulation provides a mean for the student and teacher, to systemically progress through a wealth of rhythmic exercises and disciplines. Alain Rieder has carefully assembled and designed this collection of beats (with various accompanying ostinatos), and it's suitable for drummers of most every level. Dave Weckl

It is a very well thought-out book. I really liked the examples of beats you used. It seems to give an immediate result without sounding technically overbearing. Great work!
Joey Baron

They progress logically in difficulty from simple quarter and 8th-note patterns to 16th notes and 12/8 time. Time Manipulation Drum Book release!

I have made the book available through a secret link. This is a print on order purchase, the regular price is 40 Swiss Francs + shipping, and there is a 20% discount for one week, starting from today.

Buy the book
http://tinyurl.com/y6ua5pup

This is the English edition, but I will release a French edition as well, before Summer I guess.

Audio examples
There are audio files for all of the examples. For the moment they can be downloaded by subscribing to my mailing list:
http://eepurl.com/cIOK1T

As the mp3s are meant for users of the book, it may be difficult to understand what is going on in some of the examples, if you don't have the book.
There are 147 files and they last more than an hour.

These mp3s are copyrighted and only meant for your own use, so you're not authorized to distribute, post or share them in any way other than giving the link to my site or to my mailing list.

This is a 185Mb download in a zip archive, so preferably do it on a computer with a good connection.

Well, I see we are generally in group of 4 accent sheet land.

I do that in a lot of ways and throw in reading pages.

Some new things though and it's definetly one of those books I can recommend to a student to get and work a bit on themselves alone, over the summer and stuff like that.

Clear, organized and not overwhelming.

Default Time Manipulation Drum Book

I usually write down a weekly schedule on Saturday or Sunday for the week on what I need to work on.

I divide 3 hours into these categories:

1 hour - Technique
1 hour - New repertoire 2 pieces, 30 min each
1 hour - Old reptertoire 20 / 35 min current repertoire, 20 / 25 min difficult sections of music, 20 min new repertoire if extra time is needed.

I tend to work on technique in the early AM.
