Primarily a zildjian player but I have a few sabians as well. I am more inclined to mix A's with AA's and K's with HH's than I am A's and K's for example.

Here!
I have to admit I love every brand for something. Sabian and meinl in particular. I search the sound, not the brand. I don't want to ever get endorsed on that so... that solves my problem
I'm right now using Sabian and one Istanbul crash (actually it's a 20 ride but....)

Zildjians on my left-Custom A Mastersound hats and an old school 16"Thin Crash, and Paistes on the right-Formula 602 Medium Ride and an 18" 2002 thin crash. We are not being endorsed, so who cares?

I've got Sabian AA, AAX, & HHX with Zildjian A's & A Customs.

They get along fine.

I have no problem mixing cymbal brands. I used to be anal about having all the same brand years ago but I got over it. I routinely mix Zildjian with Sabian and occasionally Paiste. I don't have much Paiste left though, only a set of Sound Formula hats and a 2002 china.

The only reason I can think of is if someone is a sponsored pro. I offered to loan my regular drum teacher a vintage Zildjian ride he lusts after but he declined saying he couldn't be photographed or video recorded using anything but his sponsor's stuff (currently Paiste or Meinl I think).

For me, whatever sounds good (and is affordable) would be my response. Currently mixing three vintage Zildjians and two early Sabians. Still looking for that perfect Paiste to stir into the pot.

My crashes are 18" K medium thin + 18" K Thin, 22" HHX Legacy heavy ride, and the hats are Artisan top over K bottom. Works a treat. I had a beautiful Istanbul 19" Traditional Dark, but it wasn't far enough away from crashing my ride that it was worth the extra weight in the cymbal bag and spare stand.

A lot of it's in the mind. When the alloys and surface texture look too different the eyes can trick the ears. When I was playing more rock I LOVED the 22" K Custom ride but it bore no relation to the other K Custom line. It sounded great with HHXplosion crashes.

I'm a blending kind of player where it all sounds like one big cymbal, but I remember JoJo talking about how he didn't want a blend treating each cymbal as it's own instrument. I love that approach - I wish I played music that needed it.

My OCD would like me to stick to one brand, but then I hear a cymbal that compliments what I have and I give in to the chaos.

I don't like to mix, purely for aesthetic reasons. My first ever kit came with Meinl cymbals, the I broke one, and trying a few so they matched sonically I ended up with a Sabian Pro crash, that eventually really showed up the other old Meinl so I bought more and more Sabian.

Now I've started up again I bought a set of Istanbul Mehmets, but I couldn't afford a matching China so I bought a used stagg one with no logo, then a stagg splash with a logo, and now a used Sabian ride.

I think I'll end up sliding glass back to Sabian, I was always happy with them before, they're good value and easy to get.

Unless someone wants to endorse me of course, if I can get a good discount I'm willing to play anything, it's very unlikely based on my talent though, hopefully slightly crap middle aged rock bands will be popular soon and I can ride the coattails.

I'm too OCD. No way. Only full sets of the same brand if I find the cymbals that sound good together.

Really glad I'm mixed brands now, I tried my new AA Raw Bell Dry ride last night and it's phenomenal. Nice and pingy on top, little bit of wash, but the edge is so light it wash rides almost like a crash.

Used to be the same - everything had to match - older and wiser now!

Sabian HH 15,16 and 18 crashes still a 'set' but using Istanbul effects (china and splash) and Zildjian hats.

For much of my life I was a devoted Zildjian guy, although I've never owned a china by them, only other brands such as Wuhan or LP. Sabians have wandered in and out of my set and now I own a 14" AA extra-thin crash that serves as a top hi-hat cymbal option, and a 22" AAX Omni that arrives today or tomorrow depending on my delivery guy. At church I mix AAs, AAXs, Zildjian As and A Customs and occasionally Ks or Zs. No audience members have been harmed as a result.

All the time. Currently hitting on a Zildjian A Custom projection crash, 13" Sabian hats, 22" K Custom dry ride, 21" Sabian ride, Wuhan China, Meinl stacker.
Quite the assortment so far.

I need to get a bigger crash, I was going to get a Sabian AA medium 19in crash or an AAX Xplosion but blimey, they're expensive new and there aren't any going used for a reasonable price.

That leaves more Istanbuls, a medium traditional at about £160 (can't get a matching one bigger than an 18inch) an 18in Paiste PST 7 for about £100, a 20inch 900 series for £140ish or a 20inch Zildjian S series thin crash for £140ish too.

It's a tricky decision. They all sound pretty good, the Istanbul would match, sounds nice but is the most expensive naturally.

Why wouldn’t you mix cymbals? Buy what sounds good. I have Zildjian, Sabian, and Meinl.
