It's Sunday drum day-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a 3/4 groove with a "conga slide" on the high tom. Looking at our feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1 while our hi-hats are being chicked on 1, 2, and 3. Moving along to rim of the high tom, we have a short three 32nd notes starting on 1 and ending on the "e" of 1. Next, we have our high tom falling on the "a" of 1, on 2, and then our slide on "and" of 2. Last but not least, our snare drum (with the wires dropped) is falling on the "and" of 1, the "e" of 2, and on the "and" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

It's just another manic Monday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a 6/4 groove that utilizes a Brazilian tamborim along with the hats, snare, and bass drum. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "and" of 2, on 4, and on the "and" of 6. Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on "1&2&", followed by an open hi-hat on 4 and then more notes on "5&6&". Moving along to the snare drum, we have a single accented note on 3 and last but not least, our tamborim is falling on 1 and the "and" of 1, on 3 and the "and" of 3, and on 5 and the "and" of 5. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar phrase that combines both a bossa nova and a funky backbeat. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, 2 and on the "a" of 2, 3 and on the "a" of 3, and on 4 and the "a" of 4, and this remains constant throughout both bars. Taking the hi-hats next, we have openings on 1, 2, 3, and 4 in both bars, as well as notes on the "and" and "a" of each beat. Now let's look at the snare drum, where we have a cross stick falling on 1 and the "and" of 1, on the "e" and "a" of 2, the "e" of 3, and on 4 and the "and" of 4 in the first bar. Last but not least, we have our snare drum voicing a backbeat on 2 and 4 in the second bar, as well as ghost notes on the "e" and "and" of 1, on the "e" of 2, the "e" and "and" of 3, and the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy hump day-ay-ay-ay! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is based on the 3/2 Son clave rhythm which is being voiced between the bass drum, snare drum, and ride cymbal. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 2, on 3, and on the "a" of 4. Next, lets look at our ride cymbal, where we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, the "and" of 3, and then we have a rapid slew of single handed 16th note triplets (counting "1 trip let & trip let) beginning on the first trip of 4 and ending on 1. Moving along to the snare drum, we have accented notes on 2 and 4 and last but not least, our hi-hats are providing the groove with a swing feel by being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is built around the polyrhythm of 3 against 4 and utilizes a single handed technique that I refer to as the "see-saw" technique for rapid fire 32nd notes. Taking the hi-hats first, we have a steady slew of 32nd notes with an opening on the "and" of 2. Looking at the bass drum next, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, and on the "e" of 3. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 1, 2, and 3. Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar waltz groove in 3/4 that utilizes the cymbal scraping technique on the hi-hats. Taking the feet first, we have a traditional waltz ostinato with the bass drum falling on 1 and the hi-hats being chicked on 2 and 3. Now let's look at the hi-hat scrapes. We have a scrape starting on 1 and ending on 2 in the first bar and then from 1 to 3 in the second bar. Last but not least, we have a cross stick falling on 3 in each bar. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! Tomorrow marks three years of Wake 'N Breaks in a row with zero days off, but lets look at today. :) Today's wake 'n break is a slow and heavy boom bap beat that utilizes a Hammerax Splashvine but you can use a splash or anything else that you would like to substitute it with. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "and" of 1 and on 3 and the "and" of 3. Looking at the splashvine next, we have a swipe on 2 and 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have 16th note triplets (counting "1 trip let & trip let") on "2 trip let & trip let", followed by notes on 4 and the first "trip" of 4, as well as on the "and" of 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are falling on 1 and the "and" of 1, and on 3 and the "and" of 3, with openings on the "and" of 1 and on the "and" of 3. Our hi-hats are also being chicked on 2 and the "and" of 2 and on 4 and the "and" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy hump day folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a dirty 16th note boom bap beat that utilizes triangles on the toms. When the triangle on the high tom is struck, it bounces and trails off in a delay, while the heavier rebar triangle on the floor tom has a more distinct "clank" effect. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 2, on 3, and on the "a" of 4. Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on "1e&a" with an opening on the "a", and then on the "e&a" of 3 with an opening on the "a". Moving along to the snare drum, we have a cross stick providing us with our backbeat on 2 and 4. Now let's look at the triangle on the high tom, where we have notes falling on the "e&a" of 2 and on 3. Last but not least, the triangle on our floor tom is being struck on the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is an uber trashy groove utilizes a see-saw like technique to play rapid 32nd notes in between two stacked ride cymbals. Taking the cymbal stack notes first, we have a steady slew of 32nd notes. Next, our bass drum is falling on the "trip" and "let" of 3. Moving along to our snare drum, we have accented notes providing us with a backbeat on 2 and 4 and last but not least, we have open hi-hats on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

It's Sunday drum day-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a laid back groove that utilizes swipes along the micro cups on my Hammerax Indigo flat ride. Taking the bass drum first, we have a single note falling on 1. Looking at the ride cymbal next, we notes falling on 1 and on the "e" of 4, as well as swipes on the "and" and "a" of 1, "2e&a", and on the "and" and "a" of 3. Moving along to the snare drum, we have a cross stick on 3 and then a snare accent on the "and" of 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are keeping a steady quarter note pulse throughout the groove. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Who says you need a ba-a-a-ass drum to shuffle? :p Today's wake 'n break is a shuffle groove that utilizes two sets of hi-hats instead of using a bass drum. Taking the hi-hat ostinato first, we have eighth note triplets being alternated between both sets of hats on "1 trip let 2 trip let 3 trip let 4 trip let", starting on the auxiliary hi-hats. Next, our ride cymbal is falling on 1 and the "let" of 1, 2 and the "let" of 2, 3 and the "let" of 3, and on 4 and the "let" of 4. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as a ghost note on the "trip" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy hump day-ay-ay-ay folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a 6/4 groove focusing on the cross stick and hi-hat, and it features a simple and plodding bass drum part (think Kashmir). Taking the hi-hats first, we have a steady slew of eighth notes falling on "1&2&3&4&5&6&", with openings on 3 and on the "and" of 6. Next, our bass drum is falling on 1 and the "and" of 1, as well as on 4 and the "and" of 4. Last but not least, our cross stick is falling on 2, 3, 4, on the "and" of 5, and finally on the "and" of 6. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Well, it's Sunday drum day-ay-ay-ay, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a boom chick groove that utilizes an elbow to bend the pitch of our snare drum, which has its wires disengaged. Starting with the foot ostinato, we have our bass drum falling on 1 and 3 while our hi-hats are falling on 2 and 4. Now let's look at our snare, where we have sixteenth notes falling on the "e&a" of 1, on "2e&a', "3e&a", and on "4e&". Meanwhile, our elbow is leaning in on the head of the snare, which creates a pitch bend similar to that of an African talking drum or even a conga lean. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of the weekend!

In the second bar, the bass drum is falling on the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, the "e" of 3, and on 4. Happy hump day-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a laid back groove that utilizes our fingers on the snare drum as well as striking one of our sticks. Taking the head of the snare drum first, we have accented notes falling on 1, the "and" of 2, and on the "and" of 3. Meanwhile, our fingers are playing ghost notes on the "e" and "and" of 1, on 2 and the "e" and "a" of 2, and on 3. Next, we are striking our stationary stick on the "a" of 1 and on the "e" of 3. Moving along to our bass drum, we have a single note falling on 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are providing a slight swing to the groove by being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a sixteenth note samba groove for pandeiro and hi-hat only (no drum set). Traditionally, samba is counted in 2/4 but I'm going to break it down into 4/4 due to the phrase we're playing. Looking at the thumb first, we have notes falling on all of the downbeats or 1, 2, 3, and 4. Next, the tips of our fingers on the "e" and "a" of each beat. Moving along to the palm of our hand, we have notes falling on the upbeats or "and's" of each beat. The entire time, pressure is being both applied and taken away from the head of the pandeiro by my middle finger, allowing me to voice the surdo pattern. Last but not least, our hi-hats are being chicked on 1 and the "a" of 1, on the "and" of 2, the "and" of 3, and finally on the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

It's Sunday drum day-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is built around the traditional baiao foot ostinato and features what I call "pulled out" tom notes, meaning that the placement of two notes gives the groove the feel of having the carpet pulled out from underneath it. Taking our foot ostinato first, our bass drum is falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and on the "a" of 4. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". Moving along to the cross stick of the snare drum, we have notes falling on 2 and on the "and" of 4. Next, we have our tom pull out starting on the "a" of 3, with the floor tom being struck first. Last but not least, we have a swung/broken triplet figure on our bass drum, falling on the "trip" of 1, "2 trip let" and on 3 the shell of the bass drum. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
