Default The Van Halen "Jump" solo

So I have spent too much time last month trying to work out the drum part for the 16 bar guitar solo in the song. I sourced an educational vid, and have the material online to follow and learn, but this has really foxed me and so far I have only really understood the first 4 bars. Is this just a really tricky piece to play?

I uploaded the below earlier - it is not my finished version as I am going to come back to it and improve, but after a fair few takes over the last 2 weeks it's the best I can get it for now. Any tips or advice for this particular segment of drumming? You will see that I soon resort to improvising to get through the solo.

Cheers

Smokin'.

Watched this several times it was so good, and the ride playing at 2:20 is insane, James.

Ha Gordon... your always so full of praise but this one needs some work for sure. I am going to continue practicing until I nail that centre solo.

You're getting there, but still to include some of the key crash accent elements & some other bits.

When my band first covered this song, I listened to the recorded original, as well as listening to a load of live Van Halen renditions of it. Alex really varies how he approaches this section, & certainly includes lots of extra stuff from time to time.

I looked around to see if I could find a video of me playing it, but I failed. I do find this video by Domenic covers all the key elements clearly enough, & it's certainly a great foundation version. https://youtu.be/aNNtjLDhm1I?t=2m12s

When I play it in the cover band these days, we've skewed the accents a little according to our own take on the song, but those choices come from a foundation of being able to replicate the original.

If I get a chance to record what I do at a band rehearsal, I'll put it up.

Good luck with it - it's a fun part :)

Cheets andy... I'm certainly going to get there in the end but it's taking time.
