Default Last time you referred to drumming as "playing the skins"?

I've had people refer to my drum set as a trap set before, but not really as playing the skins.

I say it in jest once in awhile, but aside from seeing it in movies and such, never in real life.

Playing the tubs, playing the traps, hitting the skins, ... playing your "axe" ( whether it be a guitar or a horn) ..... I suspect it stems from the Jazz Age, when musicians and music fans were expected to use hip lingo.

I hate drum slang. Tubs, pies, skins; all that crap is lame.

In our house, my wife has banned anything that sounds like a cliche.
It is what it is. I知 not about to throw her under the bus just because she wants to get her ducks in a row.

I've been playing for 25 years, and I've never referred to it as such.

A school teacher of mine was fond of saying "I hate cliches. I avoid them like the plague."

That would be never. Not even once. Not even a little bit.

I did, however, go out with a flautist who was a superb skin player. ;)

Wood-separated sympathetic membrane manually-initiated sound wave devices?

Playing the skins... no
Beating the skins... yes - during 20 minute guitar solos!

Just a little constructive criticism...you may want to re-think that title there.

Giggity...

I've never used any of that terminology in the 31 years of playing. I see it's place and all, but not these days.

I thought that was a golf term? Anyways it must relate to congas, bongos, etc more so than kit-no? Sounds creepy the more I think of it-like Buffalo Bill from Silence of Lambs playing a drum with human skins. Hey I'm surprised that hasn't been in a movie-though the vampire band in Dust till Dawn did use dead bodies as guitars perhaps the drummer was playing skins too. Yikes! Ha, ha, ha-just read my own post-did I mention I may have a slight ADD issue.
