Default Has Your Band Ever Set Up Somewhere.....

......in public, and just played for tips, or even publicity? Where were you able to do that ? Our 5 piece band is very part time, but we need a few more gigs per year, we don't have a promotional process, and for the couple of places we play every few months, we usually get less than $30 per person.

Perhaps not applicable, but I am in an acoustic three piece and we do "house concerts" for "tips". Typically 20-30 people in a backyard or even a living room, 45min to an hour set. We play 90% originals...

Not uncommon to pick up $100 or so that way not counting cd sales...

My band plays a couple of gigs that are almost for free, just so we have a couple of family friendly places to play. One of them is a donut shop and the other one is a sandwich shop. We get what comes in at the door at $5 a person, it's extremely small so not many can fit inside the place. The other place pays us $50 and what ever patrons donate. Most of our other gigs pay upwards of $80 for each person. I think the most I've made is $200.

I'm too tired just to set up and play and hope people listen.

I did this in my 20s though. It wasn't fun.

When I do the acoustic rockabilly duo, we play at a bar that says they'll give us a "cut of the door".
Thing is, we're the 1st band up of 3, the headliner is always from out of town and the show is usually mid week.
Being professionally courteous, we give our "cut" (probably $20), to the touring band and call it good.
We may have played for free, but more people were in the bar during our set than who stuck around for the headliner.

So exposure was our payment.
