Default DIY Bass Head Protector

Has anyone ever tried buying a sheet of kevlar material, cutting out pieces and glueing onto the bass heads?

Instead of paying for the name brand pads like Remo's Falam Slams.

Or if anyone has any other cheapskate alternatives I'd love to hear em?

Cheers,
LJ.

If you have an old clear head you could cut out a piece and stick it on your bass drum head. Not Falam patches I know - but the last time I bought one of those things my beater wore through it in short time and it left an unpleasant sticky residue on the head. What I found strange was the patch wore through fast, but the head just had a faint beater mark - no wear to speak of or denting. I just use the regular clear ones now.

Considering how cheap they are its probably false economy buying Kevlar sheets - and I'm not sure how it would affect the sound.

You can buy clear 1 ply laminate sheets at an office supply store. Kind of like this stuff.

You can get an 8.5 x 11 " piece. Cut in smaller portions, peel off the sticky on back and it sticks on your bass drum. Its even thinner than a Falam but just as durable.

Many bass heads come with them. I mean honestly the patches aren't that expensive $5.72 at musicians friend, 2 pack from amazon with prime shipping $5.72 Not sure how much cheaper you can get than $2.86 a patch

That was kind of my thought. I'd imagine you'd end up spending more than that trying to experiment to get your own DIY version.
