Default Let me tell you about the BS I dealt with today

So I agreed to do a musical that opens next week. I only got asked 5 days ago, but I learn parts fairly fast, and I like to help out people in need, so I said yes. They said the instruments (xylophone, timpani, etc.) would be there tonight, at the first rehearsal since I got asked. That's good, because I certainly don't own timpani, and don't like hauling my nice 90-year-old rosewood xylophone all over the area if there's no need.

So I get there, only to find out that sorry, the janitors were waxing the floor at the Middle School, so the principal wouldn't let us get the instruments. What? The? HECK??!!

I mean, these are people with music degrees handing me these excuses. They know what the gig world is like. One of them is the band director of the middle school.

I seriously don't get it. What are the odds I'd ever work with you again, if that's how you treat me? What do you think I'm going to say to other people when they ask me if they should work with you? I feel like I'm dealing with elementary school kids. "The dog ate my timpani."

I mean, I left work early for THIS?

I'll reply if only to help unblock the vent hole! Wax on, wax off.

I guess you didn't need to rehearse then?

If the principal said no, then the music staff are stuck. Frustrating for you, but also for them.

I presume you're getting paid, and you still will?

While I know that this is frustrating, waxing the floor usually only takes a day.

Can you go back later and get what you need?

Hey, it's probably the administration's fault so don't take it out on the teachers. I'm sure they feel as frustrated as you do.

I'm a professor at a public university and I'm pretty used to this non-sense. Trust me, missing a day of rehearsal is nothing compared to some of the BS I've had to put up with.

I'd give them another chance.

No, I'm doing this totally free. With almost no notice. And I will never do another show with this guy as music director. Who is still getting their ensemble together 10 days before the show? What kind of clown does that?

Sounds like the Janitor's were the only ones who knew what the real plan was?
