Default New Jazz Bands

Hi,
What "New Jazz Bands" are you listening? The last one I found (and I love) is GoGo Penguin, what about you? any recommendation?

Thanks!

Iīm myself a profi jazz player but I donīt really concentrate on "bands", more on musicians...

In fact, every time I say Iīm a profi musician the first question from the non musicians I get is "what is the name of your band", which I find really funny...

That is because the enviroment of Jazz is mostly freelancing.

Also, I think on jazz especially there is not about NEW or OLD, is just about quality (sure, should be on every style).

For instance have you already checked out these kind of things before you spend time listening to GoGo Penguin? (See links below). Please AT LEAST check out the first song on each file.

The thing (I have the impression) you should know is that far more than 99 percent of the drummers that hang here (and in every website of the world, and probably the galaxy) are NOT Jazz Drummers!

1982: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_56S3T2VGOQ

1969: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYjINJ8QCgg

I know Iīm still not answering you...thatīs because I just listen what is the last thing this or this musician is doing...

In any case, always, good luck on your search!

Hi Alex,
I got your point and I fully agree with you.
Actually I was asking specifically about bands because I usually (as you mentioned) listen to artist or freelancers and I think sometimes the band transmit a different kind of vibe, if you know what I mean :).
Also one of the things I wanted, was to know about new and young Jazz musicians and not only the legends.

Regarding your suggestions, they are absolutely great and I had already listened them several times, but again these are the Jazz legends we all know and love :)

Thanks for your comment
Cheers

Hey Musashi!

I assume you're hip to Kneebody with Nate Wood? How about Mark Guiliana's Beat Music, or with Donny McCaslin?

Here's a bunch of awesome groups from this last years Winter Jazz Fest in NYC:

I played with Norbet Scholly in...1986 (in Frankfurt)

With Brian Bladeīs alto saxophone player on that video (on darker suit), Myron Walden, in 1991 (in New York).

Best regards!

That's awesome. I got into Norbert Scholly last fall after hearing him on iFusionMusicRadio (internet station), so I bought his album and have really enjoyed it. As for Brian Blade, I've seen him perform a number of times over the years. What a joy to watch him play!

Are there any recordings of you with Norbert or Myron?

Why don't you check jazzworld.com? Lots of young jazzers and new bands that you can get listen to (only excerpts, but you get a good idea of what they do). There are quite a few good projects to explore on that site.

I don't know if really 99% of the drummers here are not jazz-drummers. Maybe a bit too high the number. But it's basically right: The majority apparently plays rock or metal.

I have heard of Brian Blade before but this video/performance is new to me. Very very very cool. Lovely music.

No, but Myron went at Manhattan School of Music with me and we played extensively there and in New York. I used to have a tape from our playing together, but donīt have it any longer...

Norbert Scholly won the International Jazz Competition as a soloist circa 1985-6 (and I was one of the six finalists a couple of years after with another group), we used to get together with Michael Harmsen (Bass, used to play with B. Cobham) and canīt remember the name of the piano player but was awesome, from Stuttgart I think.

Michael and me were from Frankfurt, Norbert is from Cologne.

You can watch several videos at my site, here some similar to the moments comented:

This is the group I mentioned from 1987 (finalist of the International jazz Competition): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqtqGzp6TpE

Here is more or less how I played during Myron Waldenīs time (1994):

Really? That's weird... I wonder why...

If you have Spotify you can listen for free here: https://play.spotify.com/artist/12jjhTjwQE5j9DhzOjViil

You can also hear short samples of the new record on the Spanish Amazon site: https://www.amazon.es/Along-Similar-...dp/B06Y2BGFS4/

Thank you, I donĻt have Spotify, but listened to the samples at Amazon. Paul Marangoni, ohhhhhhhh, you are DSOP (I didnĻt know it was the same person), hi!!!!!

Anyway, sounds good, remids me (at least vaguely) to the first Vital Information (80īs), when Steve Smith had David Wilczewski, a very nice saxophone player, thatīs the band on the first VIDEO Steve did for DCI (if you donĻt mind impressions).

The link situation often happens in Spain, for example almost everytime "jda" (since you are at Cymbalholics you know who I mean) links a video from Youtube, others hardly happens. (the message is taht the video is not available).

Once again, thank you for the info, glad to put a face to a name (I just found some videos)

Best!
