Default Tribute bands and original bands playing on the same night

Next month my new indie rock originals band is playing on the same bill as a Deep Purple/ Whitesnake tribute band. I've never played on the same night as a tribute band before. Does anyone here have any experience of doing this? How did it go and what was the atmosphere like? Did it work or did it go down like a lead balloon?

Seems like an alright idea simply for the fact that cover/tribute bands can usually bring a better/bigger crowd than original (local) bands. Your band might get some of their overflow.

Though indie rock and Whitesnake don't exactly sound like a good mix. Probably gonna be a bit older crowd for the other band.

Not to say that it CAN'T work...but in my experience it's always been a tough sell.

People going to see indie bands are trying to get AWAY from Whitesnake, for the most part. And people going to see a tribute band want something familiar that they can scream along to whilst reminiscing; a new band playing original music rarely scratches that same itch.

Having said all that I'd still do the gig in a heartbeat, playing with either band.

I agree with Phil, people seeing tribute bands want to hear familiar songs and people seeing an indie band don't want to see 70s & 80s tribute bands. Just doesn't mix. But you never know... I'd just show up with a good attitude and play your best. I wish you luck.

My main band right now is a tribute band...although a bit different in that we've changed the genre of the music (its Lady Gaga played as rock music). We've usually played by ourselves or with another tribute band, but once we did get booked with an originals band opening for us. They were a pretty heavy grungy band....not terrible, and they brought a crowd, but none of our crowds really cared about the other group. Our guitarist really lays the distortion down sometimes and we can get heavy, but we maintain the pop melodies of the original so there's always that glossy sheen over our work, so there was that dissonance going on.

Hell, when we had a Nirvana/Foo Fighters tribute band open for us, that seemed a little strange, but worked a bit better. Probably the best band we've been paired with was a Blondie tribute band...lot more crossover in fans there.
