Default How many styles of music can you play well?

In response to the "how many brands of gear have you owned" thread.

I needed to make this thread for balance purposes.

I can do Rock, Pop or Top 40, Blues, Country.

I can get through reggae, and I can fake jazz for about 30 seconds.

Big band I wouldn't even attempt at this point.

Metal came after my imprinting phase was done, so metal doesn't speak to me.

That's pretty much it.

What is the definition of "playing well"? Anyway, I do feel at home when playing 70's funk and soul, (classic) rock, (contemporary) jazz and some (contemporary) blues and pop. Plus some other things that do not really fit into the above categories.

I don't play music that is very loud, very hard or very fast (hardrock, metal, punk, hardcore,...). Just not my cup of tea. Or maybe I think that I am too old for that.

Rock, pop, blues, country, metal, reggae. I've played live to a click with backing tracks. I'd like to become more fluent in Latin grooves and improve my left foot hi hat ability. My band writes original music; my band mates like the drum parts I write, so I guess I'm somewhat skilled in whatever style of music we'd be pigeonholed as.

Rock, Pop, Funk, Country, Reggae, ......EDM 😉
Slowly taking on more Jazz
Dislike, but can play, Blues subsequently I choose to leave it off the list.

No Metal. Never tried Big Band, but may just have to try some Glenn Miller soon!

It depends on your definition of "well" but I defend myself in standard rock, pop rock, alternative rock, hip hop, electronic stuff, a little bit of funk, jazzy stuff but not proper jazz, and maybe some latin stuff.

I don't know. I can play most of the music I listen to, which I guess is normal.

I can't play fast stuff either and I rarely memorise complex fills, I'm more of an improviser.

I've ended up in lots of different genres over the years thanks to all my moving around. I would say I'm proficient in rock, pop, blues, Latin, ska, reggae, big band/swing, metal, funk... probably a couple of others I could get through if needed.

Passably well = MOR rock, simple pop, simple funk. Anything outside of that, I'm purely winging it, but I do import influences / occasional licks from other styles.

Played in a combo band(remember those?) when I first started out ,so pretty much anything the audience used to request.

From Santana to polkas to country to jazz.

If it was in the fake book ,we played it,and usually quite well.

I play them all equally well. Someone else would have to judge.

When I was about 13 I played in a band called "The Teentones" (Don't laugh!) They played everything from Tijuana Brass to the Theme From Mission Impossible to Sing Sing Sing. So I had a well rounded beginning. Later I got into weed and acid and Rock, but I did not start out that way. When I was about 30, I played with Don and the Premiers, he played clarinet and sax and we played a lot of swing and bebop. I was always into funk, from the very beginning. (I wish I could have been the drummer in Rufus!) So yeah, I play all styles well, but my Latin stuff (Rhumbas, etc.) could use some work!

The answer is very simple.

How many do you actively listen to?

In order to really play a "style" of music well, we need to be exposed to it. Simply mastering Tommy Igoe's "blues" or "jazz" section doesn't mean you're good at the style in the slightest. You might be able to fake it for a song or two, but that doesn't really count in my opinion.

Let's start by agreeing that styles aren't always defined by the drumming. For example, if I play a straight time beat, what style am I playing... Dance? Pop? Rock? Hard Rock? Metal? Ballad? Rap? Funk? Reggae? Country? R&B? That beat is correctly used in all of those styles, and therefore I could be accused of playing them all well.

So I'll say that I play most styles well, or even very well. There are styles/genres where the drumming has a more defined role, such as progressive jazz, big band, funk, and especially Latin, and I play those with a fairly rudimentary approach. Or as I like to say "like a rock drummer playing ___." But sometimes that basic, cautious approach is refreshing and exactly what a song needs, in which case I also play that well! :)

My definition of well is simply that which you feel comfortable playing in public, assuming the others are competent.

Lots of good stuff so far. Bermuda makes great points, as does Watso. It's true that what I cannot play, I never really listened to. Like Latin. Those guys make my head spin. I never really listened to it seriously. We all get grabbed by different stuff.

Good point! Matter of fact to ME, modern Country is a lot more "rocking" than what is actually defined as "rock" nowadays. What's missing from modern Rock is the killer guitar hook, the guitar parts in a lot of cases are just a bunch of strumming. So yes, I agree, and even Funk now is not what it was in the Seventies, by a long shot. Back then, you really had to be able to play! I'm talking Mike Clark of Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, Garibaldi, bands like Pleasure (Bruce Carter), etc...you HAD to have chops just to get by. A lot of the music now could be played by a beginner!

I was fortunate enough to have received a well-rounded musical education. My strengths definately lay in big-band, jazz, and funk. But in public and in the studio I've already played rock, country, pop, and contemporary worship. The music I've played the least is metal, rap, and real latin. Thankfully (boastfully?) I like to think I can fake it well enough to make it should the occasion call for it.

Rock, Pop, Funk, blues, Country, R&B, Metal, Worship, Reggae, Arabic, Persian, some classical, Contemporary Jazz, and its all downhill from there. Sometimes I feel all of the above are more of an uphill than anything! All of the above assumes I've had time to practice before a gig. Some of them take me a bit to transition to.

Difficult one. I interpret songs, I dont care about genre. If something speaks to me I play it. Some songs take longer than others to get the feel of but I usually get there. Not interested in metal, in any form, as it has never spoken to me, so I dont even try to play it. Music for me is about feel and if I can get the feel of a song that I like I play it. There are some incredibly simple songs I cant play and some very complex songs I can, as I say its about the feel.

Latin, Latin, Latin. How many of you know what clave is, let alone can play en clave?

The local Santana tribute band now has a kit player that is stomping all over it (clave) with double bass. Arrrgh.
