Default Beaters & sticks swap fumblings - funny :)

So - out of the blue, your new singist suggests you try a track. You think you know it, but you've never played it. Starts with cymbal swell & stop using beaters, then a swift change to sticks. You haven't thought this through - what could possibly go wrong?

those wacky Queen songs...theyll get you every time. I guess my question is why is he putting his sticks so far away from the next stroke? Id have placed them on my snare for easy reach and have one reversed for the cross-stick that supposed to be played in that section of the song. Fail to plan = plan to fail.

Oh, complete failure to plan. This was "sprung" on me literally seconds before the start of this video. I have since nailed the changeover :)

I'm deliberately using the bass drum instead of the snare, & the original is a full snare hit, not a cross stick. As the original used a low tuned dampened snare with full 80's reverb, I'm sticking with the bass drum choice. This band rarely carbon copies a song anyhow.

Pretty funny. Such a cool group. I am always impressed with your vocalist ....not many people dare to touch Queen/Freddie M. songs.

The Vic Firth rubber-tipped practice sticks work great when you need to do a cymbal roll really close to regular playing.

Oooo, now that's worth looking into. I do kind of like my Mike Balter soft marimba mallets though.

Yes, they can be tricky, but this one's an easy one (just that nobody told the drummer)!

So you retired "Thor" and brought out the 6 piece-sounding good my friend. If I were you I'd just lose those dang mallets. I've always kept them in my drum bag-but generally they seem to keep getting away so I've bought like 6 pairs-till the last which I gave up thinking take the hint dude you don't use them that often. Wow the new singer makes the band sound different-in a good way.

In this band, I use them about 6 times / gig.

They can be troublesome. Playing to a click with backing tracks is easier ;)

He's a most welcome upgrade :) Got everyone else looking around to see who's the new weakest link. Think I need to up my game (like actually practice for once) :(

I see you're using your wallet.

Must be the money beat :)

Is that a set of walnut segmented? You built a kit for yourself?

I have to start Pink Floyd's Breathe that way too. I just use the fat part of the sticks on the edge of the cymbal.

Funny videos !
It's great that your band mates can laugh with you !!
Playing with great friends is the icing on the cake.

Forget about the beaters and bass drum intro. Just play it the way it was written.
I'm sure you know that the the Queen drummer never used beaters and the bass drum for the intro to that song.

Very much so. Anyone who screws up is mercilessly jumped on, but always with good humour :)

Erm - nah. He did use bass drum (although differently) on some live performances, but most live shows he either brought in the full kit on the first power chord, or else they used some really weak electronic percussion backing thingy (yuk).

To get the feel of the original, I could use a low tuned & dampened side snare instead of bass drum.

I'll try that at the next rehearsal & see if it's still too harsh.

I've been screening your calls, Andy. Every time you call it's like there's a voice in my head saying 'I want one of those Guru kits... no you can't... you've just moved house... the other half would kill you...' etc.

Strange. Very strange.

;-)
