Simple. People don't want to pay taxes and corporations have rigged the system so they don't have to pay taxes (or a smaller amount, the percentage of federal revenue from corporate taxes is literally half of what it was 50 years ago) yet we still spend lots of money on crazy stuff (like $85 billion for Afghanistan in 2015 and roughly half of all discretionary spending is on our so-called "defensive" military*).

You do that and pretty soon there's no money to support the federal highway system, local police, schools, etc.

*Yes, that's right. If you combined everything we spend on NASA and science research, primary and secondary school programs, SNAP, federal highways, college tuition assistance, etc., etc., it's less than what we spend on the military. We spend more than the next 15 countries combined, the vast majority of which are strong allies.

Here is my bigger problem, my daughter had the right of way to cross the street, the car had a red light. He was turning right on red and was not paying attention to pedestrians. The cop was willing to do nothing, and seemed irritated that he was even bothered with this. He even tried to put the blame on my daughter because she couldn't remember the incident clearly. I am extremely pissed. If it was a car on car accident the man would have been charged with leaving the scene of an accident. What am I supposed to do about this?
Really sorry to hear about this MIP and am glad your daughter was not seriously hurt. Keep an eye on the head injury thing... ...and consider the lawyer route.

Geez Louise, it's catching. Somebody call the CDC! We've got a potentially dangerous math geek punster infection spreading.

These math puns are getting rather derivative. I'm just having a hard time integrating them.

I guess that's the calculus of word play.

Jim your jokes just aren't adding up to me. Sorry, but it kind of subtracts from the thread. Although some may feel divided on this issue, that just reveals the multiplicity and diversivness of the crowd here. This thread is a fraction of what it was before these silly math jokes. Perhaps you should recalculate your approach. Maybe a little more humble pi perhaps?

Besides, you're giving Madge a headache.

And just to make sure everyone is on the same page:

Using the Off Topic Lounge
The original purpose of the Off Topic forum was to discuss subjects that were musical in nature but not necessarily drum-related. We have allowed a bit of leeway with this definition, but we have discovered through trial and error what fits here and what doesn't. Please do not discuss extremely trivial matters. Do not post jokes or poetry. Do not discuss politics or religion. Do not post links to “hilarious” videos of stupid people doing stupid things. If you, in your best judgment, create a post or thread that is deleted from this or any other forum topic, understand that we have the final say regarding what is appropriate and what is not. Unfortunately more posts are deleted from this topic than all others combined, and more members are banned based on their actions in this sub-forum. For these reasons, please do not abuse this area of the forum, and save us all the hassle involved in settling disputes that could easily have been avoided in the first place.

I waited a while, but as Larry said it is a bit of a distraction. This subject has never been strictly enforced as to it's intended purpose, but the time has come.

Do puns count as jokes? Not being a wise-guy, I really think this is a legit question as it is word play and not question-answer based like jokes.

Really?

I read Larry's post as participating in the maths (or math) word play.

Anyhoo, BFY, I reject you claim that line dancing is one dimensional.

I think it has zero dimensions - it's pointless.

I went to a Guitar Center the other day. It's a shrieking nightmare, it's insanity, it's musical hell. Simultaneously there are a half-dozen guys playing guitars loudly and badly, PA announcements one after the other, everyone is shouting at each other and to top everything off there's music playing over the house system while videos are showing on big screens all over the store. I forgot what I went in there for.

I was extremely uncomfortable, as if I'd accidentally walked into a KKK rally. A few minutes was all I could take. Later remembered that I wanted to buy a new snare drum batter head, which I still need, not that it's a pressing issue.

The question is, What does it have to do with music? The off topic lounge as noted above is for music related posts not necessarily drumming or drums. Not the Amazon forum, or someones blog. Much leeway is given but dont stretch it too far. Thanks.

I would say get a fishing rod and reel with about 400 yds of 10 pound monofilament line and let that baby go.

That's what I used to do in junior high school. The kite was just a dot in the distance. It was then that I learned that even though the shortest path between two points is a straight line, the shape of the monofilament to the kite always followed a very specific curve, a shape I was to see later in some physics/calculus classes.

Of course, if the tension is high enough (like in a piano) you won't notice any curvature.

I detest rampant noise. I have to run a fan at night so I won't hear noise.

Quiet is good for music, particularly when you're trying out an instrument that you might buy.

I teach an embedded controllers course using C. One of the elements of the development system is a pre-processor that uses commands like this:

#define
#if

Mind you, the language came out in the 1970s, I've been using it for decades and it has always been pronounced as "pound define" or "pound if" or " pound whatever". I was really taken aback by a student this semester who referred to it as "Hashtag define". Same problem with my Python programming class (# is the comment token).

After all, it was the science and math nerds throughout history who discovered everything we know about the cosmos and the real neat-o, spiffy stuff like vaccines, antibiotics, food safety, global telecommunications, you know, the reaaally esoteric things.

Today's random thought: How long would it take the average drummer to become proficient at a series of prime number tuplets, one for each limb? (For example, 2 against 3 for LF:RF, 3 against 5 for RF:RH and 5 against 7 for RH:LH, which brings us back to 7 against 2 for LH:LF). Second, if the BPM was high enough, would Arky be interested in trying?

Right there with ya Jim.... I was reviewing a "sockets" tutorial this morning, specifically the listen() function - because I had to explain the whole file descriptor, poll, listen thing to a semi-technical colleague...

Happy for you! How I look forward to the day when I look forward to picking up my little girl from the airport... my not so little girl is a hormone raging nearly 15 year old...
