Default Who's the fastest drummer on Drummerworld? (on topic)

Haha, thought this thread could have some interesting one-up manship videos. Ideas not to hand out awards or anything, just a good ol' fashioned pissing match. We could have categories:
-- Fastest feet
-- Fastest hands

I guess that's it, two categories, lmao. Someone want to commence firing?

Edit: We could have other threads for who has the most feel, style, tricks, etc. This one is for fast!

Keep in mind we have a lot of super fast drummers participating on the forum.

Feet - Tim Waterson, Mike 'Machine' Mallais, George Kollias, Derek Roddy.
As for singles, we're talking around 280 bpm (16th notes). Doubles are way faster (Tim does them at around 360 bpm for a full minute.)

Hands - Matt Smith (and two similarly fast guys whose names escape me). I guess Bill Bachman would be pretty high up there, too - if he cared to clock himself.

Or do you refer to ordinary mortals? ;-) No idea...

Well yes, those guys would obviously blow us mere mortals out of the water.
Perhaps Reggae should have stipulated fastest "non-professional" member? : )

Like a "Post your tastiest paradiddle" thread?

All joking aside, this could be a good way for others to gain access to new ideas they might not have thought of, by watching others interpretations of the same thing.

Whoever puts up a video is in it, I suppose. They'd consider this a waste of time and an unwelcome competitor to WFD.

this is a neat idea... set up a few threads.... have the first post constantly updated with rankings.

you could have everyone set a click/metronome and compete..

I would LOVE to see the double strokes and para-diddles ones... I wouldn't stand a chance in those though... although that is what I have been working my butt off on lately though.

it would have to be done to a click to keep it consistent and fair.

I once saw a competition where you play a grove for a bit to a click... the click stops for like 8 or 16 measures... then comes back in and its to see who can come closest to staying on the beat.

I don't think the title of fastest drummer matters so much as the insight gained by others when they discuss their technique/practice regimen. My vote goes for "not me." While I can play singles and doubles around every drummer in town that I've seen, I've also seen some otherworldly drumming on the internet, and I'm assuming that there are some machines on here as well. Kudos to those guys, and let's hear from them! Let's see some videos of those hands!

I don't want to offend anyone, but is it just me or do these threads along the lines of "how fast can you go" always seem to draw the greatest number of smart ass replies? Why is that? I think being able to go fast just adds to your musical voice, it doesn't have to become the center of it.

In response to mandrew, your reply doesn't need a reply either. but here goes

Because its so far down on your list, you think it doesn't matter and no one is concerned with it. I get that. But you know who IS curious. Is the other drummers playing fast stuff so they have a point to compare too..

It would be the same if you were say a good hockey player. and score a lot of goals. I think you would want to compare yourself to other good hockey players who score a lot to see if your actually doing well, or maybe you were WAY off. plus you would want to see the TOP scoring guys in the league to know how far you need to go to be the best.

I agree speed means nothing if it isn't tight or is sloppy.... but to each their own. some guys want to grove.... guys like me don't mind a good ol cardio workout while i play

plus its just interesting to see.some new videos on here

Drumming Is not a competition. and i agree. i was just making a comparison.. not to argue.

I do compete with MYSELF when i drum.. even practicing. I will set a click and play. then the next day maybe speed it up.. and continue doing this.

there becomes a point where ok..Its fast enough.. but who doesn't want to have faster doubles or singles.... I have never hit the point where I don't want more speed.

this post was all for who is the fastest / contest... so if you don't want to know. or don't care.. you didn't have to click on it first off.... or shouldn't have. unless you just came to say "HEY I DON"T CARE" lol

With the genera of my band... 240 singles is very common..... so now i have to push to 245... just incase my guitar player writes a bit faster.

I have also seen some crazy fast jazz / rock / every type of player.

Some guys want to relax and groove.. I want to sweat, play blast beats and double bass.

to each their own........ but I don't click on a forum when its something I don't care about or am not interested in.

also... some people DO treat it as a competition of SORTS and want to be the BEST.

some guys want to be the grooviest drummers... some guys want to be the tightest.. some guys want to be the most entertaining. and some yes. DO want to be known as the fastest.

and why not... if your doing something. why not TRY and be the best. no matter what it is... that's how you improve. I would love to be ALL of those things i listed.... although I am none. haha.

i just see people always say.. "WHO CARES" how fast someone can play.. and honesty the answer is probably quite a few people. the people who put down fast playing are almost 100% of the time people who are unable to do so so they "don't want to"

rant done lol

You'll note that no one says anything about having fast hands, but fast feet seems to be anathema. Look at Buddy Rich, his hands move too damn fast, should we discount it as real drumming?

Obviously, no. The same thing applies to feet and hands working together. There's got to be musicality to the exercise, no doubt. Who'd be interested in hearing a mush of notes that aren't in time and are just being thrown out there to ensure a high score on a drum-o-meter.

Maybe that's how we could distinguish this test of mettle from WFD. We should have a click as a prerequisite to ensure things are in time.

Of course, I realise the idea has been deep-sixed already. The reasons, of course, intrigue me. I mean, double bass is so widely used nowadays, that speed is indeed one of the points most talked about when comparing drummers.
Okay, I will play, someone has to I guess. I posted this a while ago in the Your Playing section.

http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/s...d.php?t=108062

Host of Abominations has the faster parts to it. A good hands example at 1:30, more throughout the song in fills. There are no blast beats, sorry to disappoint if you are looking for some. Feet are everywhere, but the speed you want is around 3:50 to 4:15. Both songs were recorded with a click, Host of Abominations was at 180bpm. Enjoy or don't, you have been warned.

I liked that, MrInsanePolack. The "Cookie Monster" vocals fit the music and the whole production was really tight. I like the drumming too, very classy and old school. Not a big fan of blast beats myself.

Reminds me a bit of Suffocation.

As of now, you're in the lead for the "competition". Would have liked to see a video though :)

Please use this thread for the reason it was created. Anything else can be discussed in the 'off topic' version or elsewhere.
The OP didn't create this thread to have it derailed.

OK OK!!
I'll throw my hat in the ring if only to see this thread (hopefully) become something of a metal drummers database. Not sure which sure song would be the fastest (Self Bias Resistor maybe??).
Obviously, I've got nothing on the death/ extreme metal guys on this forum but would love to see their vids show up here as well.

Deadly stuff, Mr IP and Todd.

I normally only move this fast when food or a cone is on offer ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LdSl75BAeU

I'm guessing that I rank about 14,629th for speed at the forum - though that's probably big-noting ;)

Some great songs you covered, ToddMC. Wish you hadn't cut Raining Blood short, but the Self Bias Resistor cover was real good, always nice to see people using the same technique I do (heel-toe).

Always feel e-drummers have it tougher doing covers. acoustic drums seem to mask so many errors in a way that a midi note being triggered cannot. Just the way midi is so unforgiving in a way the acoustic instrument is not. And I'd challenge any guy that says this is not so to try and trigger on an e-drum and prove me wrong.

Anon_la_Ply, that was sick and very tasteful at the same time. That's you playing? The recording is superb, can really feel those drums and the chaotic abandon appeals to me! That jazz!

Yup, it's all me ... definitely chaotic! Ta for the feedback to the Aussie contingent :)

It's a surprisingly good sound for just an H2 Zoom. My lounge room has an attractive acoustic (and the Gurus help) so the recordings can scrub up well with a bit of EQ and 'verb.

One thing that pops up a lot in these conversations that bugs me a bit is the 'either or' attitude.

If you're fast you're not groovy, if you can't play super fast then you're a groovy player... It's almost like a way for those who can't reach those inhuman speeds to look down on those who can by saying they are more of a real drummer.

Me, I'm a lazy drummer, I won't be breaking any records so... I must be a groove drummer.

I've seen plenty of super fast drummers with grooves to die for. Some people have both, it really can happen!

Some thrashing jazz for sure there Grea : ) Will probably never happen due to privacy concerns but as I've said before, an actual video of you playing would be great (perhaps while wearing a horse mask)?

Thanks mate- I see you've opened up the triggers hornets nest again. Amazes me in this day and age how some drummers still think they play the drums FOR you (and yeah- shouldn't have been so lazy with Raining Blood) : )

Triggers definitely have a place in metal drumming, it's just to make sure your audience can hear each note at superhuman speeds.

There are other schools of thought, like Dave Lombardo pointing out that he just mics his kick and everything can be heard.

He IS the godfather of double bass and my favourite drummer. But the speeds being played nowadays wouldn't be audible without triggers, imho.

Mate, how do you find the Gen16's play- better or worse than rubber pads (and how is the noise factor)?
(BTW- no sound card in my new work computer otherwise would have listened to soundcloud)

They definitely feel better. I remember going from my electric kit to an acoustic kit and it was so difficult making the transition to brass cymbals, primarily because of the way they react to sticking.

The hi-hat is the high point of the entire Gen16 set, just sounds better and works more naturally than any other hi-hat out there. There are guys on the v-drums forums that have replaced all their rubber cymbals with Gen 16s because it feels real good.

Acoustically, too, the Gen 16s sound great. Strike a cymbal and listen to it resonate. Very different from a rubber pad, which you strike and them hear the note decay artificially.

The Gen 16s are louder than any other part on my e-kit. Strike them and they ring. But if you notice the design, all those holes actually deaden the sound to a great extent. So I'm able to play them in my house without worrying about the noise being "excessive".

EDIT: Forgot to add and it's a big omission. On the electronics side of things, there are some issues with the Gen 16s. The old microphone design system is really sensitive, so I find they even pick up sounds like stick clicks and maybe even sounds like the A/C, or something. Zildjian has since come out with a newer micing system, something they call direct source, which is surface mounted to the cymbals. I've heard some very positive reviews about them, but unfortunately, the company did not make the trade-in programme (old mics for new ones + $) available in my country like they did the US. I did have a cymbal crack though and after I sent it to Zildjian HQ in the US, they sent me a new one and also drilled a larger hole in my lower hi-hat cymbal so that I could upgrade to the newer system. The cymbals themselves are nice, but it would be excellent if some of the electronics aspects could be sorted out. Hi-hats sound great even with the old pickups. You can tweak the sound of individual cymbals using software, so that's another plus point. There is talk of making the cymbals midi-compatible in future, so that you could trigger something like Zildjian's cymbal packs. Don't know when that would happen, if at all. There is a guy called J-Man that is doing that already, mind you.

Sorry for the initial intro on my pedals, it was a demonstration. I wish the sound was better, I was using my camera phone.
