Default HD1 and the bass pedals

Okay, I'm not actually a drummer so excuse my ignorance!
Anyway, the drummer in my band has been commenting about not liking the feel of my Roland HD1's bass pedal and wanting it to feel more like an acoustic pedal.
I understand that there is a mod that involves shortening the spring inside to stiffen it, but I wouldn't feel safe about opening it up and modifying it. Is it possible to get a different trigger pad? What types/models would be compatible?

It won't accept a regular pad/trigger.
Saw this?

I did, indeed.
The article's a bit vague; I don't get the general point of it. :s

I'd just sell it, get a decent module and proceed with adding other pads/triggers/cymbals/ ... at whatever tempo the budget allows ...

I can't really afford to do that. I had to buy this second hand with help from my dad.

OK, I can understand that ...
Then I guess the most cost-effective way is to implement the hack from that article ...
You find it vague? Which part(s) require clarification?

Just the general idea of what's going on. So it works by a shorting - Would that mean that the beaters (We use double bass) would need to hit something to push a button, shorting the cable?

That's right. That's the general idea. There are dozens of ways of implement it. He showed one.

I'm not very good at that whole thing but I found this:
http://www.woodbrass.com/en/electron...it-p34769.html
Is it compatible?

Nope. No trigger-based solution works as a kick on HD1. And KD7 is trigger based, just like our kick pedal trigger ...
You need a switch-based solution.

If you haven't seen it already, here's an article about 'Fixing the Roland HD-1 Kick Pedal' which covers various problems and what you could try to improve the pedal/s.
