Default Things that go through my head while I'm playing a gig:

"How does this song start again? Oh good it's a guitar intro. Ok we're in. Yeah this is good. This is really good. Oh, that sucked. Why did I do that? Is this where the chorus comes in? Should I try that difficult fill or the easy one? Easy one. What does that hand gesture Greg (Singer) is making mean? Does he want me to slow down or play quieter? I wonder what Julie's (Wife) doing right now. How does this song end again?

I used to be the guitarist of a band that I didn't really like. I was just bored all the time while we were playing. I would be thinking things like "Man, I need to do laundry in the morning. Do I have any bills coming up?"

Nowadays, when I'm drumming at a gig, I just get so into the music that I don't really think about much. Unless I make a mistake or start to get tired, I just get lost in the moment.

Only have myself to blame but lately it's "Oh, the audience couldn't care less. Let's see if he can play the right notes this time. Oh no, here comes the end of the song, no one's gonna clap. What am I doing with my life?"

Funny, I have been playing drums behind the band for 50 years. I have enjoyed it. But I find myself frustrated watching everyone else except me taking solos, picking the songs and running the band, etc.

They never let me take solos. Guitar players are just not programmed that way. (If you think about it, very very few songs are written with drum solos.)

Yeah, I know what you mean.. Almost every song in the ska band has a trombone and/or guitar solo, but I think it's actually really cool, because a lot of ska bands don't do solo sections.

We've been working on a cover of "Vengabus", and I think there's going to be a big solo section after the second chorus, and I'm REALLY hoping they don't ask me to play a drum solo, because I'm not ready for that yet. If I was confident enough in my capabilities to play a decent solo, I would be happy to, but I don't want to do it unless I know I can nail it.

I would never be in a band in which I didn't have just as much creative control as everybody else, even as a drummer. If somebody has an idea of something they'd like me to play during a section, that's fine with me, but I expect them to be able to consider my ideas of what they could do better, when I have them.

I hate that! What is it with singers having timing issues? Every once and a while the singer in one of my bands will get off time, but won't correct it. She'll just keep going, knowing that she's off.

Right !

And if you are not ready for a solo, it could be scary.

And don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about wanting a long drum solo. I'm just talking about a few bars or maybe a 15 second drum solo.

Exactly. A good example would be, when the bridge is about to transition back into a final chorus, just have everybody take a rest, and play a few bars of some flashy solo-type fills before going back into that last chorus. I love stuff like that.

Ahahha. Can totally relate to this.
Sometimes during gigs, due to nervousness, I blank before songs. No damn idea of what I'm supposed to play until the guitarist plays the first note :-)
Then it is ok.

A few times I asked the bass player to hum the beginning of the next song to me while the singer was doing the usual audience interaction between songs... embarassing I know, that's why we have jokes about drummers :-)

Writing down the score of the songs (or the first bars, etc) and leave it next to me helps, but sometimes I forget to do it.

About two years ago, I took on the task of playing backing tracks for our 3 piece band via an SPD-SX.

The easy songs have only 3 or 4 segments that repeat in the same manner throughout the song and those are never an issue.

The more difficult ones have 9 or 10 parts that don't necessarily follow a 1 thru 10 pattern. On those, all I am thinking is, "I wonder which pad I should hit next?" Playing the wrong drum part is much easier to disguise than playing a wrong piano/horn/synth part. All I can do is kill it and wait for the next segment to come up.

When I just play drums, all I am thinking is, "This is an easy gig!" and "I wish the front line/guitar players would move around some more and act like they are having fun".

Yes!

Just as I was starting to wonder about how much energy the ska band has live (as I'm always too wrapped up in my own world to notice), I found out that at our last show, our trumpet player started playing air guitar on his trumpet during a guitar-heavy section of a song. That made me so happy.

OP - loL!

Here's my take:
" is the bass player dragging again? are the brass dragging again? Is the guitarist rushing again? Did the lead singer forget the lyrics again? Why does the keyboardist sound like he's playing a toy piano.. Where did the soundman go? Why are those lights pointed right in my eyes.. Are those lasers? If it gets any hotter in here my kit will melt. Why didn't I take up harmonica? I think I pulled something carrying by hardware box up the stairs. Why didn't I take up beat boxing? is the guitarist signalling a cue or scratching his nose.. I need a drink!

Where are all the people? Wow this place looks huge with it this empty. Oh look a person! Wait that's just a homeless guy looking for a bathroom. I hope the bartender likes us because he is the only one here. Hopefully he likes us enough to give us free drinks. No wait, he looks pissed off. I guess its no free drinks tonight. What is twenty five percent of nothing, because that is what I'm making tonight. One day when I am playing Wembley Stadium I won't have to put up with this bullshit! Where are all the people?

Except that "women" typically don't go home for one night stands with the drummer. Maybe he should have said "party girls" or something similar. I'm sure the lady drummer's have their "stud" or whatever equivalent.

In these parts the term is "talent". "Oh, there's some 'talent' in the room tonight". Personally there's not enough latex in the world to get caught up with the "talent", but then I'm also married to a wonderful woman (who I met back when I was a guitar player ;-)).

I was away for the weekend without my computer. I really enjoyed reading all of these posts. I recently joined 2 gigging bands at the same time. Had over 60 songs to learn in a short period of time so I'm still stumped at the beginning of some songs.

I charted out most of the songs but, for some reason, the singer/leader (of both bands) is totally against me using charts. He's a bit of a control freak but it's fine because he's booking about 12-15 decent-paying gigs per month so I'll give him what he wants. I don't like seeing bands reading charts at gigs either but until I have all the songs filed neatly in my head it really helps with beginnings, breaks and endings.

Anyway, more and more I'm easing into that zen state where I'm in the moment. It's just a process to get there.

Sure they do. Women run the gambit from scientist to skank and they all have a purpose in life. God bless all of them :)
