I vote for shells being slightly undersized, and the hoops are slightly bigger. A drum-builder buddy of mine told me several years ago, if you want to get rid of the splay, put some WorldMax hoops on the drum.

I also think it is purely aesthetic and not really an issue.................................what I find funny is my 70's acro has zero splay, everything is perfectly straight and it cost me 35 bones.

My Black Magic also has Zero splay, but my Black Beauty does have some, you have to look for it though. But it still is the best sounding snare I've ever played.
