Just snagged a great rally gig yesterday. "Hoggin' the Bridge", Chepstow racecourse, October 20th. 6-8,000 audience. If anyone's in that area, come & see us (+ a lot of other bands). We're on at 2:00PM.

Why is it the one time I forget my cleaning kit my AR-15 gets a stuck case and is down for the rest of the day? Every time I bring it the gun runs flawlessly.

I do bring it, the brass rods used for barrel cleaning also double as a ram rod for barrel intrusions.

By stuck case I mean that after the round was fired, the bullet casing became stuck in the chamber. The projectile had left the barrel, but its casing did not extract. It was stuck to the point that the extractor had shredded the cases rim off, and mantling the rifle (hitting buttstock on the ground with the bolt carrier locked back) did not work. Someone suggested using a tree branch, but I'm not about to have that possibly break off in the barrel and complicate the problem.

Oh, yes, I see now. Did you manage to fix it?

Yes, when I got home I was able to force it out with the ram rod. First time that has happened. I'm sure it was a dirty gun/bad round issue.

If it happens consistently, it looks like you might need the receiver re-machined but dirt or a bad round would certainly be the first explanation.

I cleaned her after removing the casing. There was tons of carbon in the chamber. AR-15 is notorious for this, as it poops where it eats. Should be all good now.

Got Syd Barrett's two solo albums on vinyl as part-payment for a guitar pedal that I sold to a mate. It's a bloody fantastic pressing and sounds hugely better than the digital versions I've had for years.

I have lived long enough to hear the following said, in all earnestness, on a major television network prime-time news show: "Ask your surgeon if a robot will be involved."

Saw a show on the Military Channel the other day where a doctor in the US used a computer to control a robot doing an operation in France. It was crazy.

I think you've got a near-monopoly on that in the West!

Although why Adrian Chiles is still on TV...

Adrian Chiles is an example of an avant-garde televisual visage.

I like listening to Moneybox Live with Paul Lewis on Radio 4. Does that make me a tragic? Gardeners' Question Time is a favourite too...

My beef with the shock jocks isn't that they exist, but rather with the fact that they're popular. I just think it's an indictment of our society that we gravitate towards the histrionics and have so little interest in intellectually honest dialogue and debate. It's all about style points and having something clever or cutting to say with a lot of bravado. Not much value placed on whether the ideas behind it actually make sense or not. Kinda depressing.

Two of the four programmes that have me reaching for the Off button. Please don't tell me you also listen to From Our Own Correspondent and Desert Island Discs.

Funny thing. In real life we wouldn't think twice about how often we contributed to a conversation ... right? ;)

I don't understand cricket but I think I might like it if I did, so I have no objection to Test Match Special. I'm pleased about that, but I am a bit disappointed re the other programmes, especially GQT. For the first time ever, I find myself questioning your judgement!

What's your view on The Archers?

I hate The Archers. I can't explain why but I think I was scarred with it as a small child...

Desert Island Discs depends on the guest. Most of the time I can't the musical choices but sometimes it works. I'm still waiting for the day when somebody goes on and asks for Merzbow.

This may be true, but it's a nice distraction from what's really going on. (They don't need to know anyway, let them feed at the trough.)
