Ah, plenty of time to square away that intro to Fireball then.

Good luck mate. Just console yourself with the fact that no matter how steep it appears, you're not alone........that guitarist still has to do Blackmore justice!! :-)

Thanks PFG, yea these young thugs have got that gig down. Tapping their little pinkies off while blankly staring at their youtube screens and ultimate guitar solo transcriptions..while ol man here's gotta do some heavy lifting he's not used to ; )

That Highway Star solo really is a classic, isnt it ...

This may sound really stupid.........
But, if you dressed the part: long hair wig, Ian P. look a like. Might give you the 'go ahead' to BE a different drummer for the night.
And, what happens on that night stays there!

I have a birthday coming up, but for the past few years I've been trying to just forget about my birthday. It's just that I feel uneasy thinking about my mother that way.

Imagine how uneasy your mother felt when you popped out J, poor woman...JK lol. I won't be wishing you a happy birthday this year, in light of the circumstances.

Be careful what you wish for. Forgetting birthdays...at least it's an option now, right?

Andy, you'd kill me if you ever saw me. You are such a supporter of mine, and I am so ashamed to even reply to your post.

I bailed - concoted a food-poisoning story and cancelled the night before. I knew eventually they'd be ok with it ( after all the guilt I got- of course that was coming -.. 10 phone calls, they'd send me a car, etc etc ) because their mainline drummer is a monster who could pull anything off last minute if there was any kind of hitch

I just didnt feel it.. maybe its the music, the people ( it was a bit of a jambouree with many 'guest' artists ), too much to do for just two songs, I dont know...

But ya, felt like a schmuck for most of the day. Dean ( the singer ) is a very classy, and courteous guy who understood & forgave which made me feel even worse..

WOuld've been a great gig if you'd covered for me ; )

I very much doubt it mate, not if their main drummer was a monster. I think I'd be running for the hills too!!

That said, I have no shame, so I probably would have done the gig anyhow ;) After all, you are talking to the guy who very badly demonstrated a kit in front of Virgil Donati without even recognising him :(

On a related (running away) subject: Our band is starting to write original material, & I just got a recording sent to me by our guitarist. It's a backing track arrangement he's keen to try TOMORROW! The freakin' drum parts he's programmed scare the shit out of me! I'm thinking of hiring in an iron lung for this one :) 24 hours notice, I mean, come on!

The propensity for non-drummers to write parts for drummers assuming they have three legs and six arms never fails to astound me. Good luck mate!

I think you're being too hard on yourself.
Sometimes we say yes to things that, even at the time we know; for whatever reasons, we really don't want to do.
And having said yes, the longer we leave it, the harder it gets to get out of it.

Just remember this time, the next time it happens!

Thats ossum, LOL

Youre right, sometimes one says yes while your inside is screaming no.. I could have done the gig- no sweat. People would have thought it was great & everyone would've been happy, but I bailed. I've got to try and figure out why : )

PS- ( please tell Andy, Henri & Duncan to stop beating up on me )

"Beating up on you"? Nothing of the sort. I actually think my post was supportive. I'm smelling your need for punishment to be metered out just to make you feel better - not happening - suffer baby!!! :) )

Makes you puke doesn't it. Every comparison I've ever made between reward for bands vs. rewards for some guy playing his music collection makes me shudder - really!

Anyhow, good luck with the hitching ceremony. I take it you are at least doing the decent thing & booking a live band?

Yeah, my wife and I skipped the DJ.

We just assembled all the songs we wanted, and burnt them to CD in the order we wanted them.

Had the ipod been invented yet, probably would have just done programmed out the entire sequence. haha.

3rd anniversary of my mum's passing today. Got band practice tonight, & I'm just not in the mood. The horror will never leave me.

I'm coming up on 8 years, and the anniversaries never get much better.

My 6 year old is starting to notice the pictures on the wall, and noticing his friends all have grand parents but he doesn't. I'm dreading the day when he finally starts asking for details.

Be brave. Because they remember you with happiness. They would want to be remembered, but not for you to be sad. Not easy, but real. Courage and laughter.

I hear you Andy. For me it was 12 years ago with my mom.She had Alzhiemers so her mind was gone years before that.I understand the horror.

I wasn't in a mood for much of anything for quite some time after that.

Stay strong mate.

I've thought about this and you have to put some memories in their place - like old age degradations of your parents. That's not who they were in essence. It's just a bummer that happened to them. Old age messiness is minor in the greater scheme of things, compared with their ideas, life lessons, jokes, talents, blundering etc back before the mechanical process of ageing set in.

Put those memories aside and use the anniversaries as an opportunity to remember the good times and make sense of the tensions. I appreciate my parents more now that they're gone. Hindsight, eh?

I think we appreciate our parents more when they're gone is because we miss them, when they were with us, we just took it for granted, but now there gone, we're only left with memories.

We all feel it differently I guess, stay strong Andy...

No matter how tough a workday was Chick Webb can always make everything better.

Andy, in my culture we observe Day of the Dead which usually involves beers with friends and family and sharing stories about out loved ones. I'm sorry for your loss, I'm so close to my mother and I know that her passing is going to be a really rough time. Listen to some Chick Webb, it's like Valium for the soul, except you can mix it with booze and you won't get brain damage.

Guys, I really appreciate your kind thoughts & guidance. I don't want to pour my damaged soul out here for fear of boring you all, but my mental challenge is this. I fully contextualise my mother's passing, as I do my father's shortly after, but it's the way my mother died that I just can't get out of my head. Visions of her final weeks haunt me terribly. On the day she died, her tumour was more than 50% of her body mass, & in the last two weeks was growing by over 2LB a day!. I spent the last 4 weeks listening to my mother screaming 24 hours a day. On one occasion I had to physically restrain my brother from smothering her with a pillow. She had a fairly rare & unbelievably aggressive form of ovarian cancer. The doctors told us early on that they could keep her pain free - they lied. There was a time when doctors would keep increasing morphine doses, & perhaps adding heroine until the patient died. That time has gone, & doctors are scared to do anything that could be perceived as euthanasia. My mother paid a very heavy price for their PC adherence to our society's insistence on legal claim infested protocol. I'm tempted to go into an anti political/religious lobby rant, but I won't.

Sorry for burdening you on this fine drum forum, but my anger is fairly consuming at times.

Andy, that's terrible. If a patient is terminal the only ethical option is to eliminate pain as much as possible - certainly that kind of pain - and if it shortens the patient's life then so be it. Sorry to hear this, Andy. Try to hang onto the good memories.
