Mostly prog, but quite a bit of stuff really.

King Crimson, Mats/Morgan, Tool, Opeth, Cynic, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, Zappa. (Also, I saw Dweezil the other day as he was in town and he's still an amazing guitarist.)

Some non prog stuff includes Burial, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Agalloch, and Death.

Trilok Gurtu, 21 Spices (with Simon Phillips on drums). Outrageous big-band world music. *Much* to be learned there... Phillips has such tasty damned chops.

Adele 21. Just bought it yesterday. Quite an interesting set of drum sounds. Mostly very dry and human-sounding. Great vibe on some songs.

Admittedly... Lana Del Rey.
I like her vocal timbre and melancholic vibe/songs. Plus she's not really offending to the eye, haha. She doesn't nail it on live performances though.

Plus soundtracks - e.g. "Monsters" (from that little British 2010 sci-fi movie) - great electronic soundscapes.

The album "Brothers" by The Black Keys whilst I do my homework. Kinda mainstream and cliche but that doesn't stop them from being a good band. Patrick Carney knows what's up.

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead. Every couple years I check in with this album and always end up running it through at least twice. Great piece of work.

What an album. I do the same thing, except it's every couple of months. I just can't help myself singing along to every cut.

The Hurt That Finds You First, maybe? Personally one of my favorite Meshuggah songs ever.

Right now, I'm listening to "You Suck" by Strapping Young Lad. But I've also been listening to Ki by Devin Townsend a lot recently (very different songs). Personally, my favorite song on Ki is "Heaven's End". (the mastering guy accidentally named it Heaven Send on the cd before it was pressed...)

Me too! Morrissey was so cool; his words are phrasings are amazing.

Almost along those same lines ... Disintegration and The Top by The Cure have been in heavy rotation lately. Those two are just some of the coolest collections of writing and production values I've ever heard. What the hell were they putting in the UK water supply back then?

I've never really explored The Cure but I've got a few friends that are obsessive Cure fans. I ought to broaden my horizons there. My real love is Joy Division and earlier New Order - there was definitely something good happening and most of it in Manchester (although The Cure were from Crawley if I remember).

We were doing something right. Still do sometimes, for that matter.

Is it possible to conjure a cooler collection of parts than this song? The bass line makes me want to scream it's so cool (though not sure why's he's shown with a guitar in the video...) and guitar parts are right up there. Sparing vocals that take their sweet time coming in, and the drum pattern is pretty addictive, too. I love playing along to this song - both on drums and on bass - and can do so on infinite repeat without deviating from what's there and without ever getting bored.

I have some friends that had a Joy Division tribute band for a few years and they were spot on (they were called Curtis). I get how powerful and influential they were, and they definitely have a compelling story, but for whatever reason I never caught that bug.

The bass looks like one these bad boys:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bass_VI

I can absolutely see the attraction here. I think (when budget allows) I'm going to buy a few albums and put them on repeat for a couple of days. The little synthesisers parts over the top is really dragging me on and I love the distorted guitar tone at the end - the good side of 'nasty' like David Gilmour's tone on 'Animals' (which is my favourite Pink Floyd album, incidentally).

Yep, I can see it.

With Joy Division, I hated them as a teenager. No idea why. Then a few years ago I gave them another chance bought both the main albums and I was hooked. I think the bass playing is what dragged me in and there is much fun to be had playing along to 'Disorder' on the bass:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3pvKyd7l_c

EDIT: Just found this video of a modern reissue of the Bass VI:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqnCNwcvYSs

My, oh my. That tone. I need one of these in my life now. Right now.

I think you're right about that bass. There's a lot of sliding into notes on that line, which chews up my fingers pretty fast, so maybe the lighter gauge strings of the VI isn't quite so harsh. And man, what a tone that thing has! Wow.

That's a pretty crazy bass line on Disorder. I like it when bass players take up that much melody leaving guitar players free to roam the noisy soundscapes.

Just got done listening to some Avenged Sevenfold (City of Evil) and some Akira Jimbo albums. At the moment I am literally listening to Duke Ellingtons Uptown, afterwards I will be listening to Dave Brubecks time out and then maybe some Gregg Bissionette and Dream Theater later......

I listen to a lot of YES nowadays (as my avatar suggests...)

I've always been more attracted to the early Yes, which for me is 1969-1974, but I've also taken interest in the 90125 album (1983). I also think their 2011 album Fly From Here is brilliant.

I often play Yes songs when I practice. Music in headphones. I frequently play my way through Fragile and Going For The One. I think it's really nice to play Yes since it's both heavy, groovy and soft, and you really have to pay attention to what happens in the song.

If you wanna listen to Yes, start with the Fragile and Close To The Edge albums. If you like it, move on to the other albums. That would be my advice.
