Clear snare batter, interesting - how do you like the sound of that?

Yes, now that is a great looking gig space. Love the industrial vibe, & it's ripe for maximum "snareverb" loveliness :)

I hated it. The whole kit was a rental that was driven up to us pretty much sight unseen. This was the last week of the tour and I just went through my last head. The shop was across the street from the Fabrik [Just Drums] moved, and I didn't have time to change it. The sound was okay, but I swear it gave me vertigo playing it.

And you're right, cd, the atmosphere was really excellent. And the backstage was classic in every respect, with some truly fun backstage wall graffiti, yet mysteriously clean and tidy. And during the day, half of it turns into a youth center so kids can come and do activities and stuff. Very well organized place and truly a treat to play there. |

Interesting setup! Are you going for the flat toms because of space reasons,
or sound? |

The rotos are classic (if not dated) rock. The sound is great and they pack up 2-for-one in cases. Much easier on my back. The sizes are 12" 14" 16" and 18". 20" bass, 14x5" snare.

Haha....stoic eh? I hate to smile in pics, so I guess I'll take that as a compliment :) That gig was in a huge 6000 seat mosque. The sound was crappy though, like being in a gymnasium. The sound guys were complaining about the room sound as well. Looked cool in a picture though!

I've gigged on lead guitar (main instrument for 25+ years), bass (in a couple of different gigging bands), and now drums (in a cover band and an all original band.)
I've only made drums a primary instrument for less than 2 years. I seem to be picking it up rather quickly, from all of my experience with other instruments (even though drums and guitar aren't related IMO.) I still have a loooooooong way to go, though. Thank God I was able to find an original band that I love.

My band played a couple weeks ago in our "hometown". We absolutely love this venue and the turnout is always great. A few hundred people there, not necessarily to see us specifically, but there none the less.
Had to use the headlining band's drum kit, which I didn't really want to do but I made the best of it. Here's a few pics that I really like. I LOVE this one. Our bass player has a little Steve Harris swagger going on: ![]() Caught me mid twirl: ![]() Having a good time: ![]() Always gotta give em a show: ![]() I like to cross my arms and hit the crashes for visual effect: ![]() Another twirl: ![]() And we printed this poster and signed it for our biggest fan. This lady is responsible for getting us played on the local rock station. She promotes us so much and drove an hour to this show by herself to see us. We knew she was coming so we had this poster made for her. She LOVED it. And had no idea we were gonna give it to her. We gave it to her from stage and thanked her for her loyalty. It's literally the ONLY Meet At Sundown poster in existence. Not even the band has one.

This pic recently surfaced. From one of the few gigs I did in 1990 with guitarist Tommy Tedesco.
For contrast, here's a more recent shot.

A few pix from recent club date/banquet small group jazz events. The scaled down kit works
amazingly well for smaller rooms. |

Groove1, is this a snare used as a tom on your right?

Yes, it's a 5x14 snare with snares, throwoff etc removed...absolutely no rattles. It works well
in conjunction with the "rack tom" which is a micro timbale snare with the snare mechanism removed. It is tuned lower than usual but both drums are tuned tight enough to enable easy stick bouncing. Playing the micro timbale about 1" from the hoop and between lugs with the butt of the stick simulates a rack tom in low volume settings. I've gotten more compliments about that drum (and the bosphorous ride) from fellow musicians than any of the rest of it. The micro timbale is outstanding for latin-jazz tunes. I have 3 snares that I use, a 3" piccolo, a 4" wooden snare and the black beauty (5x14) as shown. For small venues I love it because I can really dig into this kit instead of "playing lightly" on bigger drums. The bass drum I made from a floor tom and it measures 9x18. There is one spot where it can be tuned and it works but there is no leeway at all. |

I don't have any gig pictures, but here's us trying to record a demo in my school's old gym. It sounded awful, so we decided to abort that. We're gonna try to find a different recorder and try again soon.
