For the first time in years, no - scratch that - ever, I feel sorry for the Australian team but particularly for Clarke. There is no doubt that Clarke is a superb player and absolutely World-class. He'd make his way into any test team in the World currently playing and most of the great teams of the past. His declaration in the first innings was a bold move but one that I fully support.

The big problem is not just a lack of proven batsmen (that's a given) but also the Australian selectors looking for a 'magic bullet' spinner like Warne. Your team was spoiled with Warne and he was always superb (and one of my playing idols) but since his retirement, Australia have been looking for a like-for-like replacement. You're not going to find one. Warne was a freak. Part of what Australia needs to do is find a good spinner (like Lyon, actually) and just consistently select them - even if they are just a defensive player and not an outright wicket taker. From the top of my head I can count a number of Australian spinners that have played fewer than ten tests. How do they expect a bowler to succeed if they're just going to chop and change every few games? Even Warne struggled in the Test arena for the first few games.

It's not even like the Indian spinners are great. They're good but not great. Swann and Panesar out-bowled them during the England tour. Australia are playing spin like complete muppets.

Henri, I grew up watching Hendry. He was a real great and it's a shame he didn't retire before his ranking took a dive. I'm a big fan of Ronnie O'Sullivan but I like players that are inconsistent. Makes it exciting!

cricket is easy to understand. One Person tosses a ball and another person hits it with a bat. I used to be okay at backyard cricket played with a tennis baII.

This is my first post with a smartphone. much harder to write than with a PC!

I've been using Johnny Walker BL in my new favourite cocktail du jour, the Chancellor:

2 measures blended scotch
1 measure ruby port
1/2 measure french/dry vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters.

Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Mighty!

Tequila for me. Any brand, but the best type is anejo. As in old.

Well, not that old, but aged, usually in oak, for at least, um, a year. But it can cost even more than a good single malt. Best way to drink it is straight, in shots. No ice. No salt/lime b.s. either.

(The cheap tequila that chain restaurants put in your margaritas usually spent no more than a month in the vat.)

Yes, Mum used to tell us about that - the date rape drug of days gone by.

Have to be Brandy Alexanders and Golden Dreams, Abe - when it comes to cocktails creamy and sweet can't be beat!

Having said that, I'm a big fan of taking a chug of scotch from the bottle. Brilliant for oral hygiene.

My parents are on vacation in Italy. I just sent my mother an email telling her that I plan to propose to my girlfriend. I'm so nervous. Played a gig with her dad tonight and asked for his blessing, we're both drummers. He was happy to oblige. Gave me a big ol' hug too.

Pol...you have to try a "Nutty Irishman". One part Baileys Irish cream, one part Frangelico hazelnut liquior, and a dash of cream. If creamy and sweet is what you desire, that's just the ticket. You can even leave the cream out if you want.:)

I've been writing random bits of music for this upcoming movie, and today the director got fired.

Oof! I thought "oh no, all that work down the drain."

But I had a talk with the producer. He actually wants me more involved, and instead of like the last movie where they used several bands and another music writer in addition to me, this time he wants me to do ALL the music, from the sugar-gum pop songs to the orchestral scores.

Way more work, but way more money. Just not sure where I'll find the time of day to do it all. LOL.

The only downside is I probably won't have time to play drums until at least September.

Well done, Ian. Seems like your soundtracking is going well. Maybe you could use one other band to help out? That way you get most of the gig, reduce pressure and keep music live ;-)

Not much live going to happen.

The one song with real drums and guitars is apparently being written out of the script. LOL.

Thanks!

Until a year and 1/2 ago, I didn't know either! LOL.

It just sorta happened. It's a fun way to stay involved in the music biz without being in the music biz per se. It's some extra money. But it's nothing I can quit my day job over.

Some examples are here: http://www.youtube.com/user/DrumEatDrum1

The band killed it last night... I mean absolutely killed it like never before!

It whats one plays for - each playing off each other, tight as a bull's butt, mistake free, sensitive, great dynamics, beautiful solos, controlled not meandering...totally connecting to an audience which wasnt big on this kinda music to begin with..

..and Im such a downer, always looking for mistakes and weak moments in post- gig band conversations, but last night - NADA!

People danced, cried, jumped up n down with joy, were overcome with emotion and were all over the band..even the pretty girls.

Its what I play for.

...

PS: Its was a mostly cover, fusion/ R&B set.

( For the curious, heres the set list in sequence )- drums, keys, sax, guitar, bass

1) Stratus
2) Pick up the Pieces
3) Drop n Roll
4) Cissy Strut
5) Midget Match
6) Original
7) Red Baron
8) Original
9) Watermelon Man
10) Led Boots

...

That's huge Abe - huge for you, & your love of performance. It's a special moment to park in your consciousness. I echo calls for a clip if you have one. Every time I hear your playing, it delights me, so I'm thinking this would be even better.

Very cool!

Thanks, Andy. Its that elusive happy- tingly feeling that we're all familiar with and what we chase everytime we count off the first tune at a gig. You know it!: )

You know he can't do it, Andy.

It's a quantum situation where the act of observation changes the event. We all know that these kinds of moments only happen when someone forgets to press Record. Or in other cases the file will be corrupted ... the equivalent to the old days when the cassette would self destruct in a froth of tangled tape spilling from the machine like Greeks from a wooden horse. But only when the band really nailed it.

Blame Murphy.

Thanks Polly. Is your real name Grea? I've read people calling you that. Is that short for something? Gretta? Grettle? Do the Aussies pronounce that like "Gray"?

Bought the ring this weekend at a pawnshop. Vintage looking white gold piece with a large ruby. As with instruments it is always best to buy used, let some romantic idiot pay the jewelry store's ridiculous markup. I also scored a triangle for 3 bucks and my birthday is Wednesday. This is shaping up to be a wonderful March.

I love myself some whiskey. My favorites ATM are Maker's mark and Glenlevit. My brother also brought me back a very good bottle of Mezcal blanco (white) from a trip across the border. The same stuff I had on a trip to Mexico City, I was delighted.

Pro Tip: Rewiring a Stratocaster and modifying by adding new switches usually takes a lot longer than you first think it will.
