Default Zoom Q3 HD users

For the Zoom Q3 users in the house, I have been using one of these clamp on cymbal holders. I put it on the back of the 2nd floor tom and gently thread the Zoom onto the top and aim it at the middle of the kit. If you hit the 2nd floor tom at all it will shake the camera a bit but its not bad.

I think for $30 you can go to Best Buy and get a budget camera tripod which would be better - not being connected to the kit.

That said, Zoom makes a mic handle you can screw into the bottom the Q3, which I also have. I just use a round base mic stand and drop the Zoom into the mic clip. As a mic stand, it resists getting knocked over, and takes up less space.

I have plenty of tripods also but in a pinch where you can't get one set up behind the kit this little arm works great.

The camera shaking would be a deal-breaker for me.
I've been experimenting with different angles when doing covers. Personally I like to show as much of the kit and what I'm playing as much as possible- I'd imagine that you'd have a pretty close up shot of yourself if the camera was mounted to the kit?
Also, just found out I was ripped off with the tripod that came with the accessory pack (well, it was an ebay/ Chinese, cheap purchase). A mate of mine has the same setup but his tripod telescopes out to about 50cm total, while mine barely makes it to 20cm (plus the screw in attachment is a lot more adjustable on his).
And the so-called "wind muffler" so reduce wind noise when filming outside? Useless!
End of rant....

Great idea, thanks for sharing!
I'll also have to check out the microphone stand adapter, though!

Good stuff.

I use those mini tripods with flexible legs and just wrap the legs around something to keep it in place (cymbal stands, mic stands or whatever else I can find that can give me a good angle). Works very well, and allows for almost infinite positioning. Cost me about 15 bucks at the local gadget. store.

As a bonus, it's also extremely portable (fits in my pocket), and it's practical for normal cameras as well. I wouldn't mount my girlfriends heavy DSLR on it, but for any compact camera it works great.

A mic stand with a round base, a multi clamp and the top section of a tripod yields a small foot print.

Tripods foot print is too big at small gigs.

If you're going to wrap/attach a camera to something, make sure that something isn't subject to vibrations, especially sound vibrations (bass), you'll need to check this when the sound is happening of course, or use a little perceptive common sense.

I too have the Q3/mic stand adapter (like this) and use it on a round bass mic stand for gigs and such.

However, for making drum videos, you will get no better sound than to use a boom mic stand to position the Zoom Q3HD above your head and pointed down on the drums (like overhead mics.)

Thanks for that link Sgt, just ordered one.

Forget the multi clamp/tripod top this is the way...altho I can get my camera 7 feet + with the tripod top and mic stand.
