Default Yamaha dtx500k - starting metronome through software

I like to use the groove check feature on my yamaha dtx500k (metronome ticks but if you play anything out of rhythm it no sound is output) and was wondering if there was a way to start the metronome on the dtx500k brain with the groove check working via software on my laptop. I have it hooked up with a US-midi adapter. I want to be able to play along with midi files and have the metronome synched up. Is this possible? Is there any software that can interact with a drum kit at this level? I just want to be able to synch the metronome up with some software.

Also what type of beater is best for an electronic kick pad? I am using the one that came with the kick at the moment - not sure what its called i think its felt - sorry I am new to this.
