Sounds like 6 measures of 3/4 and 2 measures of 4/4 during the B. That's exactly what I think is going on. I do hear the 3/4 in Miles 1st chorus. It starts at 1:23. But as you say, it follows the altered B form you mention. It seems like the rest of the solos follow that as well. |

can you figure out where the B comes in under the solos? is there an extra A? it is definitely not landing where it lands in the head

Another extra A in the second chorus. But I didn't hear an extra A during Wayne's first chorus. Or maybe I'm fuzzing out now and missed it :) |

I must be getting old because I love doing this stuff ...and this form under the solos is throwing me for a loop right now and I must concur it :) and I think that A before Miles is just the last A of the AABA form ....no?

I got it 8
it is exactly what we said it was under the solos the B is tripled but with 6 measures of 3/4 and 2 measures of 4/4 so very interesting so the head is AABA and under the solos it is AABBBA with the altered Bs (wipes sweat off brow) I would still be struggling to figure this out without your help brother ....thanks they disguise that 3 very well at points

Yeah, they disguise the 3 well indeed. The shift between 4 and 3 and back, effortlessly, is one of the things I love most about this band. That live clip is SICK. God, I loved that group. |

Stitt is amazing. Just ridiculous. Here's a fave of mine from his catalog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld92Fa9sn6g
I love those Haynes and Rollins clips. Wow. It just blows my mind what musical experiences those cats have had. I mean, recalling a session from 1948. That's like 20 years before I was f***ing BORN. And they were making historic music. And hanging around now, talking about it. And they're still sharp, remembering those dates. Especially Haynes. He sounds like a young man. |

Don't get me wrong, I love technology, modern medicine, etc. But if I could have been a young man back then, I would have been in heaven. Just having a scene like that, going out and taking in all that music. I mean, can you imagine? "Hey, Ants. Let's go down to the Five Spot and check out Monk with Coltrane tonight." "Okay. Then, after that, let's see Miles at the Cafe Bohemia." Like a dream. And it really happened. The lucky ones who got to be around through that, man am I envious! |

I was lucky to have seen and heard Sonny Stitt many times in Chicago in the 60's. The
most memorable was when a group cancelled (winter flight didn't arrive on schedule) and a group of "musicians in town" was put together for the club. It began with Groove Holmes on a B3 organ and a drummer (and I have no idea who he was!)....in came Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, all 3 on tenors...dang! It was heaven. Dexter was residing in Europe but was in the states for a bit. It was the one and only time I saw him. |

I say, it's all relative. Keep your memories, because the generations that are coming up (some of which may not even be born yet) are gonna be sayin' the same thing about US, like we are about those guys 20 years our seniors. I get a little of it, already. "Man, you played there back in the 80's?" "Yeah, but it was different back then." You've never seen a group of 20 and 30 year olds so agape in your life. Sometimes I almost wanna bust out laughing. It's such a strange feeling to have people react like that. =) Elvis

My Dad always said that about me. He lived through it and passed so much information onto me before he passed. I was blessed.

Hey Guys,
I have really been digging this Ben Wolfe album "No Strangers Here" recently. Great band with Hutch on drums, and absolutely gorgeous string arrangements! Check this ballad out: http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LnV89ilFjw Thought you guys might appreciate this.

Recently found this: Ed Blackwell said that it was his favorite album he played on(apparently he listened to it pretty regularly throughout his life). Eric Dolphy and Booker Little Live at the Five Spot.

A couple of interesting new releases:
![]() This includes a live concert featuring Miles' quintet playing some of the Bitch's Brew music two weeks before they recorded the album, along with other goodies. I'm thinking I've got to have this. ![]() This is the first record Shorter has put out in eight years; it's his same quartet (with Brian Blade on drums) with six new Shorter compositions. Looks tempting.

I saw Ed Blackwell at the New Orleans Jazz Fest back in the 80s. He was playing with Old and New Dreams. Peace and goodwill.

This is huge. I hadn't even heard a peep about this until just now. Considering how much of that album was attributable to Teo Macero's work in the editing room, I want to hear how the music sounded in raw form.
