Default What's the thickness of sticks I need for metal drumming?

I've tried Promark and Vic Firth, and personally liked Vic Firth more. I currently have Vic Firth American Classic Hickory 5A Wood Tip sticks.

I've read that thinner thickness plays faster, which I believe is what metal drummers (such as myself) need.

What diameter thickness do you recommend that I try?

Thanks in advance.

Wherever you read it, was not necessarily correct.

You need a stick with a diameter, length, taper, and balance that works best in your hand. Not all metal drummers play the same kind or size of stick, and one size doesn't magically make you faster.

Mike Mangini, holder of several World's Fastest Drummer titles, plays a stick that is 16.5" long and .585" in diameter... quite a bit fatter than your .550" 5As. Vinnie Paul plays a stick that is 16 7/8" long, and .630" thick. Derek Roddy's stick is 16.25" long and .590" thick.

Besides that, there is no "this stick is for metal, this stick is for jazz" rule. Gavin Harrison plays a huge, 16 7/8" stick with a .630" diameter and a huge, knobby tip. he uses it for everything -- rock, jazz, whatever.

You need to experiment with a whole bunch of sticks and find what feels best in your hands. This is not an overnight thing... I've been looking for almost 30 years! (I think I'm pretty close, though.)

Best of luck.

I would start with the "rock"model from Vater. They last a long time (play rim shot all the time) and feel great all around. Had problems with Vic firth breaking after 2days :(

+1 on that one, just like no one drum is for metal, or pedal.

I agree with what everyone has said but if you need some ideas los cabos 5a sticks are nice as well as pro mark 5b shira kashi oak sticks are very nice. If your a vic firth man try steve gadd or jojo msyer sigs. I play metal and all these sticks are great.
