Default compressor for bass drum mic

I am looking for suggestions for setting up a compressor to enhance my bass drum sound when using a D112 in live and recording situations. I have a two channel dbx compressor and no clue how to set it up. Thanks for any tips, settings, or ideas.
Peace

Try ratio to 8:1 or above, attack about 8-10 ms, release 300-500 ms and the threshold so that every time he kicks hard you see about 6-10db of gain reduction. This should get you in the ballpark... Then just try different settings till you like it.

Compression isn't always the answer.

In what way do you want to enhance your kick drum sound live?

D112 has plenty of thump, for live mic'd purpose I like a pretty muffled kick
that setup with eq alone should get you a killer bass drum sound. resonant boomy kick - I would put a gate on it.

compressors on drums in the studio is a different ballgame.

8:1 ratio is pretty heavy.
I would submix (bus) the drums to compress the whole KIT.
I would start with 4-5:1 ratio and play with the attack and release settings.

Thanks Spectron,
I have a dbx266L compressor / gate.
What kind of settings are you suggesting for gating? I'm confused between the gate and compression functions.
