Default Evans EQ3 versus Super Kick II

On my Birch BRX, I currently have an EQ3, pulled from my Yamaha YD set and is 3 years old. The head still sounds good and even freshly cracks a little with certain lugs. I get a very focused, sharp attack from it. I've heard so much about the Super Kick II and I have never tried one. What would the differences be between these two heads, and if you've owned both, what do you prefer? What can I expect from a Super Kick II?

Also, what other heads are good for recording? I'm looking for a sharp, focused projecting kick sound. Maybe I should stick with the EQ 3?

Thanks!

I've tried quite a few kick drum heads in my day. Always come back to the comfort of the Powerstroke3.

The SKII is two ply, so it is quite dead, deep, and thuddy. The SKI or SKIII might be better suited to you for a 'sharp' sound.

The EQ3 will tend to project a bit more but, without any form of additional muffling, will be less articulate. This is a bit of an apples vs. oranges comparison. The EMAD2 is more in line with the Super Kick II. That being said, both the EMAD series and the EQ3 offer adjustable/interchangeable muffling options to fine tune the sound.

Cheers!

What about the EQ4? I was listening online and I think I like the darker attack of the EQ4. how does it compare with the EQ3?

Are you using the Evans site to A/B the heads? I believe a good deal of what EvansSpecialist would say regarding the difference between Evans branded heads can be heard and described on their site. I thought that per the web page the EQ4 is ever so slightly brighter.

I would start there and then if you still have questions, ask those in light of what you've heard and read on their site.

BTW: I think Evans did an excellent job with this web feature. You won't get a 100% representation of the sound until it's on your drum and you're playing it. Until then this site has at least the differences between their own heads well demonstrated.

Good catch. I was thinking of the EQ2. Yes I did listen to the samples on the site and that's what I liked better. Those numbers are so confusing!

Edit - EvansSpecialist, there is an apparent error on the site that lists the "EQ1" description under the EQ4 drumhead. I was trying to find the difference between the two and couldn't find one until I saw that they were describing "EQ1" (verbatim). Thanks!
