Default G2 batter and EC reso a bad combination?

So ive played on Evans G2 batters a million times on other peoples sets and ive always loved them. They had a nice jazzy but versatile sound and they were always really forgiving in the way of tuning... even live between songs. so i finally made the switch to g2s on my set and they sound absolutely terrible. now given that my shells are not of the quality of some of the others that ive played on with g2, i dont attribute this to the issue because my shells have simply sounded better with cheaper heads before.

However, the one thing that was always different from my setup was the reso heads. usually complimenting the g2 batter was the g1 clear reso. they always seemed to go great together, but right now my resos are EC Reso, clear. So far im getting great clean warm tone from the reso, but the g2s sound really pingy and whiny...almost metalic, like a timbale...not like what ive heard on anyone elses shells.

Ive tried all different tunings (both same note/batter high reso low/batter low reso high/etc. ) and the only time i can get a decent sound is with the reso high, and the batter low to get that "bend" effect, but by the time i get there its so low that it sounds bad again.
driving me crazy.

So i guess my only last route left for question is this:
Is it possible that the combination of the G2 batter and the EC reso just dont go well together? Any thoughts?

I would run and get some G1 clears.

As much as Evans wants to sell premuffled reso heads like the EC, it just doesn't work imo. Your resonant head needs to resonate, haha, so yea.

That being said, your G2 batter shouldn't sound as bad as what you are describing. I'd double check to roundness of your drum, your tuning, your tuning range, etc. As make sure you have an EC Resonant head, not the EC batter.

I play two drum sets with EC Resos, and they both have very good deep sustain. Peace and goodwill.

"the g2s sound really pingy and whiny...almost metalic, like a timbale" doesn't sound like a head problem or a shell problem. Sounds more like you just need to revisit your tuning. A G2 is a heavy-ish 2 ply head. It should be fat and full, and a little deeper too.

The EC resos aren't my cup of tea, but I have a friend who swears by them.

Every drummer wants "their" sound from their drums, and not every head or combination of heads will deliver that for them. I find that a clear G1 is the best all-around reso for my needs, regardless of the shell, or volume requirements on a particular gig.

I tend not to like the EC Resos with G2's since I'm usually trying to maximize resonance. I will use them with Black Chromes (this combination is golden!) to really dial in the low end and filter out everything else- toms don't even need EQ when mic'd with this combo.

I would recommend either G1 clear resos or Genera resos in combination with G2 batters. As always, I would also recommend taking both the reso and batter off the drum and starting from scratch for tuning to get the ratio dialed in

Cheers!

Hmmm......I wonder who that could be. ;-P

BTW, I do agree about the clear G1 as a great reso head........or maybe some clear Remo Ambassadors. >;o
