Default How can you make a clear snare head sound better?

The snare head I ordered is on backorder, and the head I have on now is trash right now, all I have is a clear snare head. So I put the clear snare head on and just remembered how bad clear heads sound lol, so how can I muffle it to make it stop ringing so much and to make it sound better?

Swap it for a coated one. :-)

moon gel. otherwise swap it out. you won't be able to get a clear head to sound like a coated one no matter how hard you try.

Sprinkle some fine ground semolina over the head and spray paint it white.

This is a serious answer. . . better than what? what is it that you hear that you are not satisfied with? Is it too pingy, tubby, ringy, dead? First determine what it is that you want to change, so you know in what direction to move in. You may think it sounds bad, but it may sound great to another. Until you have an exact idea of what you want to change, you will not be able to determine what needs to be changed. You could end up refitting the whole drum and still not be happy.

Coated heads only sound a little different than clear heads. The problem is most likely tuning. I am assuming it is the top head, the batter head. A snare should sound good with a clear batter head. The cheapest way to muffle a head is with duct tape. Good luck.
